Hello everyone, and welcome to

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Dilemma Redux!

What is Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Dilemma Redux?
Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Dilemma Redux (often acronymed as {VLDR}) is a forum game originally devised by Metrion. It generally incorporates elements from the series it is named after, Zero Escape, but includes its own twists to create a unique strategy and deception game.

What's in a VLDR game?
For a game to be considered VLDR, it must contain the following parts:
  • A Roaming phase
  • A Puzzle phase
  • An Ambidex or Nonary Game
  • Roles for every player
Discussion phases, in-character roleplay, and many other things are up for debate, and so are not inherently required.

The many phases of VLDR
VLDR has no day/night phases, but cycles similarly. The most general progression is Discussion > Puzzle > Roaming > AB Game.
  • Discussion - Generally used for conversation, and to make choices that impact how the game progresses. Basically filler.
  • Puzzle - Split up into groups and solve puzzles with your team.
  • Roaming- Explore the many rooms of your prison.
  • Ambidex Game (AB Game) - Ally or Betray your opponents. Your choices affect the amount of points you gain or lose.

The Rules
The following rules are generally standard for every game, however hosts may edit, add, or remove rules as they see fit.
Spoiler: 1) The most important: respect your host and the other players. Please remember that this is just a game.

2) Your primary goal in this game is to escape the facility. Note that some roles may have additional goals, while others don't need to escape at all. You will learn how to escape as the game progresses.

3) Do not, under any circumstances, discuss your role. Do not claim a role, do not list your role's abilities, and do not name your role's win conditions. This includes hinting at or "softclaiming" a role.*

4) Only post during designated phases. Your moderator will tell you when you can and cannot post. Dead players may not post.

5) Everything is facilitated by your moderator. PM chains, actions, etc. You give the input, but the host gives the output.

6) Do not talk about the game outside of game means. This may apply even for dead players. Ask your moderator before talking to another about the game.

7) Do not join this game if you will not be active. This game normally takes anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. The more active the players are, the less time it will take to complete. Inactive players maybe kicked from the game under host's discretion.

* Games with in-character roleplaying may allow role discussion should it not break the fourth wall.

Who are you?
VLDR games incorporate roles of some sort, as it gives incentive to players to cause excitement in the game and offers a challenge. Not everyone wins, boys and girls!

Below are the standard, "vanilla", roles that many games may use. If hosting, feel free to modify any of the roles as you see fit, or create your own!

So who's in charge around here?
Metrion is the main curator of VLDR on the forums. He governs the main threads and has the most experience hosting, so if you have any questions, feel free to approach him. You are also free to simply reply to this thread with any concerns on playing or hosting. We're pretty relaxed out here in the deepest corners of the forum, so don't be shy.

Secret Archives
If you play or host this game, it's highly recommended you make new PM folders. A lot of the game is done in private messaging, and you can expect hundreds of PMs from a single game. It's not recommended that you play in more than one VLDR at a time, if only because of the amount of PMs you will get.
VLDR is very open-ended, so if you would like to host a game, all you must do is meet its requirements. The rest is up to you! Even after all the games so far, we are still looking to perfect various things in it, and so no two games are the same. Experimentation with features is encouraged.

Host Spreadsheet Guide
Spoiler: Overview

This spreadsheet is designed for VLDR hosts who want to keep all their game information in one place. The spreadsheet makes certain aspects of hosting much easier by using color coordination and automated data. You are able to make a copy by opening the sheet and going to File->Make a Copy.

>>SPREADSHEET LINK<<

The sheet has undergone an aesthetics update since this guide was created; do note that nothing has changed functionality wise as of this edit.

Things to Note

  • Make a new copy of the sheet every time you go to host a game. I periodically make updates to the sheet to make things easier or add new features. Therefore, you should create a new copy for your upcoming game as close to the launch date as possible, to make sure you have the latest update.
  • This sheet is designed using the VLR game format in mind. It is still possible to use if hosting using other methods, however the sheet will not optimize your experience.
  • When you're copying a cell and pasting it in a forum post, the pasted contents will be surrounded by quotation marks. I don't know if you can turn this off so just keep in mind to remove those before posting.
  • Never, under any circumstance, alter the functions of the sheet. The rule of thumb is do not add text to a cell if the f(x) bar has any color.
    Image
    Image
You are able to edit the text of cells that have a dropdown arrow, however you'll be thrown an error that isn't particularly harmful. There's a way to add more options to dropdowns that I'll explain later.

Players

This is the tab that you'll be spending the most time in as a host, and as such, there's a ton to go over here.

Image
Image

  • Name: If you wish to automate postgame results, then enter the player's full username. Otherwise, this section just reminds you of who someone is playing.
  • Alias: Name of the character the player is playing. I would recommend using whatever name the character uses to introduce themselves in-game, should they not be using their actual name. The character aliases are used quite a bit in the sheet, and this allows you to easily show other players parts of the sheet or used the automated BBCode processes without leaking the character's real name.
  • Role: If you wish to automate postgame results, then enter the full name of the role.
  • Stats: If you use a different statline than me, then edit the purple cells accordingly. If you wish to show positive stats with a plus in these cells, you have to put an apostrophe before the plus; for example, a stat of +3 must be entered as '+3, otherwise it will simply show as 3.
  • Health: The options here are color coded for convenience. Use the N/A option if you're hosting a game with less than 12 players.
  • Vote: The options here are color coded for convenience. Use the N/A option for unsubmitted votes, or if you're hosting a game with less than 12 players.
  • Charges: The options here are color coded for convenience. I primarily use this row for roles that have a specified number of charges for an ability, not abilities that reset based on phases.
  • Items: Standard inventory keeping area.
  • Basekit: The options here are color coded for convenience. This is separate from the other items as roles in my game that have a basekit get an extra inventory slot to hold their starting item.
  • Wincon/Adept/Inept: Simple places to keep track of information.
  • Location: Use the dropdown to select what room the player is currently in. The locations here are pulled from the Rooms tab, and therefore only works if locations are available to pull from in that tab.
  • Win?: If you wish to automate postgame results, check the box if the player has won the game.
  • res: These tabs are available in case you have an extra piece of information to track. They don't affect anything else on the sheet.

Bracelets

Image

If you are using a VLR styled setup, then update the Doors dropdown according to what colors the puzzle doors are. The sheet will automatically sort players by colors and polarities, and then display what the three possible options are.

Image

If you are using a 999 styled setup, then you can use the dropdowns to see if proposed combinations of players can go through the door legally. The sheet will automatically find the digital root of the players' sum. Keep in mind the following:

- Only use numerical values in the Door cells.
- This sheet follows a "minimum 3, maximum 5" rule, just like 999. Fill in the cells from left to right; if the first three name cells are not filled, you will not get a result.

Library

This tab may look intimidating at first, however it is behind most of the automated processes of the sheet. For the most part, all you have to do is select options from a dropdown.

Image

  • AB Booth, AB Results, and Post Game Results are all automated to make your life easier. AB Booth is for an opening message should you want the flavor. AB Results color codes the results by bracelets like this. Post Game Results will give you a post like this depending on what you enter for the colors/username/alias/role. You will be able to select and copy the light blue cells after filling the information in, which is particularly helpful when hosting on mobile.
  • If you want to use colors not in the default selection the forums gives you, then store them in the Colors cells. That way, all you have to do is copy the cell the BBCode is in, rather than scramble for specific hex code each time you want to use it.

Image

  • Player: Automatically pulled from the Players tab.
  • Color: Assign bracelet colors using the dropdown. Also color coded for convenience. This is what the Bracelets tab pulls from.
  • BP/#: Enter the number of BP a player has (for VLR styled games) or the Bracelet Number a player is (for 999 styled games) here.
  • Polarity: Assign bracelet polarities using the dropdown. Also color coded for convenience. This is also what the Bracelets tab pulls from.
  • Full BBCode: Selecting and copying this cell will give you a list that looks like this. Also useful for updating bracelet assignments in the OP.

Rooms

This tab is the most important for making the Roaming phase less stressful.

Image
Image

  • Room: Name of the room goes here. Try and keep it simple unless you don't care how the Location tab looks, as that's the dropdown that pulls from this column.
  • Original Description: There are eight tabs here for you to store room descriptions. What I do is label the cell with the subject of the room (for example, for an Infirmary I may have "Enter" for when someone first enters the room, "Cots" if there are cots in the room, "Healing Pod" if there's a pod, etc.) and then add a note to the cell with the actual description. You can add a note by right clicking the cell and choosing "Insert Note", choosing Insert->Note, or using the hotkey Shift+F2.
  • Updated Description: In case you want to keep the original descriptions intact but the room drastically changes, there's eight tabs here to utilize. If you don't care about keeping every version of a description then feel free to utilize these as extra spaces for room descriptions.
  • Items: Keep track of items in the room here.
  • In The Room: This cell automatically lists who is in the room based on the selections made with the Location dropdown. DO NOT EDIT ANY OF THESE CELLS. You might delete the function and break it.
  • Notes: Blank cells that don't affect anything, so fill these with anything important about the room to keep track of.

Puzzles

This tab is exclusively for recordkeeping.

Image

  • Name: Name of the puzzle room.
  • Puzzle Descriptions: Much like the Rooms tab, you can record descriptions to easily copy/paste. These tabs are actually merged, so you may unmerge them to increase your number of puzzle descriptions to 18.
  • Rewards: Rewards for the puzzle.
  • Empty Space: A large area for you to record anything necessary for the puzzle. Up to you what you want to put here.
There are, by default, 22 puzzle sections for you to utilize. If you need more, you can swiftly create more sections by selecting all the necessary cells and dragging them down.

This tab does not affect, and is not affected by, other aspects of the sheet. As such, you are free to delete it if you record puzzle elements elsewhere and don't want it sitting there.

Hall of Shame

In order to keep the VLDR Hub's Hall of Shame updated, please fill in only Part A of this sheet. Part B is automatically compiled if you mark who won on the Players tab. Once all the necessary information is filled in, copy the "Hall of Shame" code tab that is highlighted blue and ship it off to Met.

Data

DO NOT EDIT OR DELETE THIS TAB. You shouldn't be able to do the former, but I can't test this as I created the sheet in the first place. This is the most important tab as it allows the other tabs to automate the information they're supposed to. Yes, it's a mess. Not even I can tell you what's going on. But it works, so don't touch it.

Need more dropdown options?

Perhaps you have another health status not listed, or you have more rooms in your game than what is provided on the sheet. There's an easy way to add what you want and have it work.

Step 1: Select the cell with the dropdown.
Step 2: Go to Data->Data Validation.
Step 3A: If "Criteria" is "List of items", then add your item to the list. Separate the items with a comma.
Step 3B: If "Criteria" is "List from a range", then increase the range the cell pulls from. For extra rooms, you'll only have to edit the number after C.
Step 4: You can select the cell you just edited and copy/paste them into others and they will contain the updates you made.

If you wish to color code your new option:

Step 1: Select the cell with the dropdown.
Step 2: Go to Format->Conditional Formatting.
Step 3: Select "Add another rule".
Step 4: "Format cells if...Text Contains" and enter your new option.
Step 5: Choose the color you want your text to be, and update the text accordingly.

You can by bypass most of Step 5 if you select an existing rule and select "Add another rule" — it will create a copy of the rule you selected, so all you'd need to do is edit the "Text Contains" and cell fill color.

You will need to update the range that this rule applies to on the sheet.

Automatic Rolecard Formatting
Spoiler: >>SPREADSHEET LINK<<

This spreadsheet will automatically format rolecard BBCode for you to keep things neat. You can use the sheet by doing File->Make a Copy. Currently, the sheet only formats in the following styles:

Basic Format:
Amphibian
“They have no idea what's under here!”
Code: Select all
STR: +0     |     DEX: +5     |     VIT: -2
-------------------------------------------
PRC: +5     |     INT: +0     |     SKL: +2

Big Hops - You will always succeed any action involving jumping.

Gooey Glue - Any items touching your skin (by holding them, wearing them, etc) will be unable to be stolen from you.

Escape with 4 others.

Biography Format:
Kiba Waymeyer
Age: 25
Sex: ?

A scientist studying the phenomenon known as the Spectrum. You've suddenly found yourself in this weird killing game, but hey, isn't getting into reckless shenanigans like this part of life's ultimate fun?

Some notes:
  • When you copy and paste the rolecard BBCode to the forums, remove the quotation marks that surround it.
  • Do not add quotation marks to the role quote; the formula does it automatically.
  • In order for numbers in stats to show up as positives, use an apostrophe before the plus sign (e.g., enter a stat of +3 as '+3).

New hub though. Ask questions about the game here, or make suggestions, or talk about how fantastic Zero Time Dilemma will be. This can just be a general discussion thread.

The new Armour role is interesting. I could see it used effectively with a creative designer, since you can flip it to be any role.

I enjoy the Mavrick, or whatever. Like most of the evil roles, simplicity is golden, and it would be fun to play as I would think.

Doppelganger is awesome as always.

Originally it had a gun, then it was nerfed to have a baton, then it was brought back to a gun with only a single shot and less restrictions.

Unintentional pun on Cow's part is amazing.

Yeah they're pretty legit roles. Can confirm as a professional confirmologist.

Well technically you did win that one game as a Doppelganger. Just not as the Maniac.
So you have half a win.

This game seems like a fresh meme.
Average Joe seems like a good meme role imo.

I'll probably join one of these at some point.

Guess I should announce it here since I've already told a few other people. I'm working on another VLDR that will happen after the current one ends.
I'll post an announcement here at least a day before the signups are posted.

I have decided that I am going to go through with my game idea.

Signups date is TBD.

The game will be twelve (12) players.

A couple other things about the game I will host in the summer:
-Hidden stats: Not as omnipresent as in VLDR IV. There might be some hidden stats (they might be shown to the players I havent decided yet). There will not be as many stats as in VLDR IV.
-The game will have multiple possible endings, depending on decisions of the players
-There may be role cards. Given the premise of the game, there may not be role cards. All players will be given a secondary objective. Primary objective for all players is to escape the facility.
-Forum location: The game might take place on this forum or I might make a createaforum forum for the game. The reason that I would make a createaforum forum would be because it is easier for me to manage all aspects of the game as I would be able to make boards, and other things such as inventory boxes that only individual players can see. Also players may be required to not have their current forum username for flavour purposes.
-Traitors: Not a thing this game. Not doing that again, that was a really bad idea last time.

TheCow and I are planning on cohosting a VLDR sometime soon. We'll give more details in the future once we have things more fleshed out, but there's a solid base already.

We should probably set up a queue for people wanting to be hosts.

Also I believe any games of VLDR would be better hosted here, on this forum, for sake of simplicity. But that's like, my opinion.

Are you guys planning on using a map making program or some sort? If so, what program / website do you think you would be using?

I do agree with this. After hosting a couple games, I can say that management really isn't that big of an issue. It makes it easy to just write everything down and go retrieve information when you need it. Mistakes are also part of the game, it's not perfect.
I'd be quite wary of going to a new forum for this game because I am adamant in saying that that was one (cough) of the reasons that the other was cancelled. Moving to another forum was really burdensome.

I used the deepnight RPG map maker for my current game. It's not very detailed, but it works well and is easy to use. Metrion, on the other hand, either uses maps from the games or makes his own using some drawing program I think.

Jasc Paint Shop Pro #9

The last good one before it was bought out then run into the ground by it's competitor adobe (I think). It's very meticulous to make good maps in most photoshop/paint programs so I don't recommend it if you want something quick and easy without sacrificing presentation.

Also, for the Roaming phase, room chats will be in quicktopics rather then in PMs. Because pMs can only have a maximum of 5 recipients (one of which must be the mod), quicktopics allow for more people in a room then just 5. Also quicktopics are easier to follow then long PM chains, especially from a mod point of view when you try to understand posts in context.

(the current quicktopic in use per room will have [CURRENT] in the title)

And using another forum would be mostly for flavour purposes but it will probably be on this forum because of the issues of the other forum (especially because it kinda broke the game because people were not familiar with how the PM system worked so some PMs got sent to the wrong recipients and things kinda broke from there)

Wouldn't you have to switch quicktopics every time someone left or entered a room though?

Yes but its not hard. Quicktopics are super easy to make (you literally just click the "make topic" button).

Whenever someone enters or leaves a room, the previous quicktopic would be locked and new ones would be made.

Some interactions would be done by PMs, such as meeting in hallways and things like that.

Or maybe a quicktopic would only be made if there are 5 or more people in a room.

Actually, I think I will go with that; all roaming chats will be done by PMs unless there are 5 or more people in the room in which case a quicktopic will be made.

room chats are part of roaming, the amount that they are relied upon will be based upon the players.

Signups for my game will go live when I finish making puzzle rooms and flavour text (and maps). I will post date estimates for signups when I can.
