Before Patch 2.0, Arsonists will ignite if controlled/transed into themselves.
After Patch 2.0, Arsonists will instead douse themselves.

I have experienced this before.

Yeah, I think arsos should be douse-immune. Making them waste a night is really stupid for an already UP role.

Arso isn't UP, it just has problems with KPN.

I'm in Ranked Practice. My role is trans.

D4 (I think), the only people left are Myself, Hunkules the Trans (we all knew who the transes were by then), Jailor, NE, Arso and GF (who were called Hera, Hades, KoolBlud and Potato respectively). No-one besides the Transes had claimed. Knowing that there were transes to protect the jailor, we decided to vfr. We vote up Hades, who claims Med. This is impossible since TS died, we had two vigs in the game, an we still had two confirmed transes. We lynch him and he turns out to be Jester.

D5 Hunkules is dead to Jester. Jailor jailed KoolBlud and was killed by Mafia. So now I know everyone's roles, but its too late. The best I can hope for is a draw, if me and GF lynch the Arso and then I just block him from killing. GF doesn't vote up Arso and says nothing at all.

D6 I trans myself and Arso, hoping GF wouldn't attack him. No kills. GF remains AFK.
D7, I do the same thing. Then, at the start of the day, GF leaves. I'm pretty sure I'm totally screwed. But I only need one more night with no kills to force a draw.

D8 I trans the Arso with the disconnected, but not officially dead GF. The next morning, GF is dead to suicide. Arso somehow lit himself on fire. Town wins.

I don't know how that is even possible...

What I suspect happened was one of the times you switched with Arso he was targeting you and doused himself. Then he either did not see the message or did not realise that you can remain still to clean yourself off. I also don’t think you can transport with some who’s about to suicide, so Arsonist may have effectively stayed home that night.

Anyway, I feel like a bad person. Reached an endgame with a Werewolf, a Veteran, a Mafioso and myself (the Arsonist). Werewolf tried to maul me the night before, but I managed to trick the Doctor into thinking I was Town and he healed me, whilst I ignited the Serial Killer. That day we voted together to lynch the Mafioso, as he was the only one who could kill that night. I then doused the Veteran, gambling (correctly) that’s he’d either be out of alerts or else would think I was dousing Werewolf. Next day Veteran cleverly claims to want to be lynched and Werewolf nearly goes along, until I pointed out that Veteran probably figured we would kill each other simultaneously and draw (I lied and said I doused the Werewolf). We then make our case to the Veteran and this is where I feel guilty. Werewolf was a new player who hadn’t won as Werewolf before and was really desperate to win. I claimed to also be after my first Arsonist win (which was completely false). I also (honestly) argued that Arsonist wins are perhaps, on the whole the harder of the two to get. Either the Veteran agreed with my argument or else thought he could shoot me when I went to douse him, but we lynched the understandably frustrated Werewolf and I ignited that night. :( Always feel a bit guilty about taking big wins from new players, particularly as I remember trying to get my first Werewolf win (back when it was only immune on every full moon).

Well, you did what you had to do to win. You don't have to give up your win just so a newer player can get their first win as a certain role.

They have the lowest winrate.
Dousing and igniting everyone but you and another person with a KPN of 1 is really hard. In a game where none of his targets died and there was 1 death each night, without lynches, this would take 8 nights. The arso would be found before that. If he decides to kill each full moon night, it would take 9 nights.
Another thing that makes them UP is that they are the only NK that can die to a teammate. SKs have immunity, while the other one are unique. But arsonist are forced to waste a night if they are visited by a teammate. That's pretty UP for me.

And assuming a single death each night and a lunch every day with no doused deaths, we get Night 6. That's a pointless calculation anyway as the death rate is never that steady, and lynches are variable. The fact arsonist isn't unique is stupid, but ignorant make it underpowered, as multiple arsonists can work together, and even then, that's impossible with the current ranked rolelist.

It's UP, but WW is definetely the worst. Sure, it's swingy, but it has a KPN of .5, where the Arso has claimspace because of douses tricking invests AND it has increasing KPN from .5<. Since it has claimspace, it can stall better, and Mafia does still kill. Additionally, the Arsonist has no interaction with the Doctor.

You may be right. I never complaint about ww because they are my favourite NK. Anyway, only bad ww have a kpn of 0.5, unless town is full of mediums, retris and psychics. Also, they can claim sheriff, which is a good claim if you scumread some mafia. And maybe the doc can save his target, but he has to die in exchange. The thing is that at least ww manage to kill some people before losing.

It really depends. As I said, there was a time back when I was new when Werewolf was objectively THE hardest role in the game. It had no immunity on every odd night, so it tended to win only by either getting really lucky and mauling quite a few people or else by some grave (geddit?) mistake on Town/Mafia’s part that led to them losing control of Werewolf. I used to love being Mafia when Werewolf was around as it would take out a few Town and then you could kill it without even needing to out them to Town. Was pretty frustrating playing Werewolf, though.

Nowadays, it all relies on what the Role List is and the quality of the players. In Ranked or other game modes where it’s just the one Neutral Killing, it’s Arsonist. Werewolf has an advantage in those modes as a) you can’t get another Neutral Killing anyway so uniqueness doesn’t matter, b) Werewolf can take out important roles like Jailor early if they can figure out who’s going to get jailed and most importantly c) Werewolf’s victims actually die when he visits them and whilst that reduces claim space if they’re quickly figuring out who’s who then you want Town to lose majority as fast as possible (without handing Mafia the victory) and alive people are still a very active threat that can catch you. Arsonist’s douses can overlap with the Mafia’s kill, wasting the night (whilst with Werewolf you usually get someone who wouldn’t have died otherwise). Furthermore, roles like Escort can completely neutralize the Arsonist, whilst on full moons Werewolf will just cut through anything in it’s way (albeit likely exposing themselves, but that doesn’t matter as much if you’re late game when a vote either way can swing it). Arsonist does have an advantage in Custom or Chaos games where there’s an opportunity for multiple Neutral Killings, as the graveyard fills up quickly and your attack is very helpful for cutting through multiple immune enemies. I suppose you could argue that you’re just more likely to get the win as a Neutral Killing in the latter sort of games as opposed to Ranked, but on power of the roles alone I think Arsonist is harder.

If we're talking about potential, the Werewolf wins. Thing is, we don't compare roles by potential. Town may be full of PRs, but the chances of having the same target as the WW are still very low. The Werewolf is too swingy to compare anyway, as it completely relies on other players. There isn't any more to discuss here.

Anyway, this conversation inspired me to go back to Ranked for the first time in forever. First game, I roll Executioner. My target is B A N A N A. Day 2, only one person is dead - to Veteran. This was their will:

My role was forger and the mafioso killed some random guy and I forged their will with some cheesy pun I came up with.
The next day, their will showed up and it said:

"Why did Mary Warren's husband leave her? Because she WARREN good enough."

His role was Mayor.

Then some guy popped up on the chat and said something like,

"you deserve to die with that kind of will"

VIP mode, rolled Coven Leader. Dance, puppets. Dance on your strings...*evil laughter*...

D1, RC is Poisoner. Good if there's no Doctor. Poisoner and Medusa immediately both claim Crusader on VIP. Munrah says he'll be on Poisoner.
N1, Medusa urges me to send Munrah to him, so I do. Poisoner poisons Executioner (the guy was named that, I know there's no Exe in VIP) and Potion Master attacks Sora Fortune. Munrah comes up Crusader.

D2, Mr Meeseeks is dead to Crusader and Medusa, Munrah is dead to Medusa, and Sora Fortune the Trapper is dead to Potion Master. Coven wins...Wait, what?

As it turns out, Munrah was the VIP. Meeseeks was a BG protecting the Medusa (because he believed their Crus claim) while the actual second Crusader protected the Poisoner (who had also claimed Crusader). D2 Coven win, and all the Coven are laughing about it.

Tl;dr So short I don't even need to put a summary here.

Neat. That does show the inherent problem with VIP though, all it takes is a lucky break for CL or a stupid VIP and town is screwed.

I was playing my first game as Plaguebearer and claimed Tracker throughout the game. Somehow, even though I got attacked once and was immune, no one suspected me of being anything other than what I claimed. Finally, after two of the mafia died to a veteran in one night, we had me, the vet, and an arso. The consig had just died and in his will he put that "samuel parris is arso." The vet is all excited that "we" won and was making fun of the arso. But once we voted the vet up, he got super mad at me and said he would report me for gamethrowing. The arso also thought I was gamethrowing and said, "thanks idiot now I win" after we had lynched the vet. I said, "oh really" and he got super confused. suddenly, the pestilence message popped up. His last words before i rampaged were "oh no"
