discuss: why would you attack a surv claim in the night?

as the title says - why would you, as mafia/sk/vig attack a surv claim at night? you either have 2 options: youll hit someone whose immune, thus wasting a night; or youll kill someone who might be an ally, thus wasting a night. im not saying trust surv claims 100%, for examples im about to say, but of the last week, ive claimed rolled mayor and claimed surv about 10 times, and of those 10 times, night 1 i was killed by mafia 6 times. so i come here to ask - why would they attack me? yes i was mayor, but night 1 they wouldnt know that and should take the surv claim with a grain of salt until someone else mentions it?

why would you, as a role that can do basic attacks, attack a surv claim? discuss

yes im aware surv claims could be fake, thats why i said "why waste a night?" either youre killing someone who could help you later on, or youre wasting a night not killing at all. i could see maybe day 3+ or so after more of the town is gone, but night 1?

That's where you're wrong. Surv is not aligned with mafia, nor is it against town. Survs would most likely side with town just because they're the majority. Mafs won't risk getting outted for trying to work with surv claims (assuming it's true) and would even hang surv claims.

If I'm Maf I wouldn't kill a surv claim ever unless I was almost certain they're an important Town role. There are too many actual Town member options to waste a night killing someone who could side with you.

As Vig or even Jailor killing a surv claim isn't a bad idea if you have no one else to target. There isn't much to lose if the alternative is to not kill anyone. Of course killing a Mayor or Jailor who claims surv would probably cause you to lose the game, but it's much more likely that the surv claim is an actual Survivor or something worse. If they have defense, you could kill them the next day.

As mafia, if we have a Consig, I would ask him/her to check the Surv claim first, then decide based on the results. If he is real just let him live, of try to make the townies susp of him.
If I'm other evils, I would probably ignore it and let town/mafia worry about the veracity of such claim, and check it again later in the game if still alive.
As Vampire would try to convert him and have him keep claiming survivor. If he vests, we only wasted a night.

The only time I kill survivors claims at night is when I'm jailor and I have no better lead, either I killed a survivor which could always turn evil so it's not too bad or I killed an evil that pretended to be survivors which is great, if you claim you are mayor in jail I would tell you to reveal the next day.

idk if you use the same name in game, or have the same skin, but if people see you fake claim surv as mayor once, they gonna hit you every time you claim surv. Besides that, youre hardly the only person using that strat. Maf know youre not a maf fake claiming surv, so youre either NK, actually surv or a townie that doesnt want to be killed. As a surv claim, if you are a townie, there wont be any TP on you.

So you are quite wrong about having 2 options, you forgot the 3rd option of youll kill an important townie fake claiming the role, which is quite common at this point in time.

this has become a common thing, many people will not visit n1 to appear to be real to a tracker

Nope. Survs will side with Juggernauts, Werewolves, SKs, Pestilence, and all it takes is a death threat from Mafia or Coven to get them to vote their way.

I always hide as surv til I know one side has an overwhelming majority.

Survivor is such a boring role, I always claim it day 1 and purposely not vest for the 1st 3 nights in the hopes that maf will kill me.....if they dont, I have vests for late game and can kingmake the game however i like....

I think that's what we were already answering.

If it isn't night one, then the decision of who to kill depends not only on role, but also on competence, and on what goals the player chooses to pursue in day chat.

They basically have nothing to go off of, and some surv claim would just be enough of a threat. Again, they are either real survs (in any way is not aligned with mafia, AND WOULD BE PRESSURED TO SIDE WITH TOWN EVEN MORE AFTER THEY HARD CLAIM), another killer, which may be immune, but they can push for lynch at that point, or an important town role who thinks no one would see through the fakeclaims.

You also may have been reg hunted if that's your go-to strategy

Would you rather kill someone who likely has no ability and may or may not side with you or someone who probably has a night ability that directly harms your alignment? The chance of hitting Jailor/Mayor doesn't outweigh the fact that you're probably going to hit someone who could easily side with you.
