Beneath the Turnstone Peaks - Cancelled :(

Postby squosher » Wed Feb 26, 2020 11:00 am

Why do I feel this is a horrible mistake.
Beneath the Turnstone Peaks
A D&D Adventure

The small town of Harrowhill has existed for some time now. It was originally founded as both a mining town and a stop along the mountainfoot path, a long trade route traversing the southen foothills of the Turnstone peaks. On the outside, it would seem it has changed little from how it originally was, but as you stop at the town for the night, you quickly find that things are not as they seem.

How this will work:

  • You can play this game whether you have played D&D before or not, but obviously if you haven't played before there will be a bit of a learning curve.
  • This will likely play out as a fairly slow game, with it running continuously rather than being split into sessions at certain times. I would reccomend trying to make at least one post a day.
  • The game doesn't have a set ending date and will end once you resolve the story. It will likely not be finished quickly.
  • The entirety of the game will be hosted on the forums, without need for anything like discord.
  • Rolling will be done on this site so I can see what you roll. All you need to do to is enter the dice you will roll into the first box (e.g. 'd20+3'), a description of what you are rolling for in the seconde box (e.g. 'attack roll against the goblin'), enter 'BeneaththeTurnstonePeaks' in the third box, and enter your character's name in the forth box (e.g. 'Fred'). Then press roll and everyone viewing the history will be able to see the roll.

How to play D&D:

  • D&D has a lot of rules but in the end it really comes down to the same cycle that are in pretty much any roleplaying game. The DM (i.e me) describes a situation, the players say what they want to do and the DM tells them the outcome of what they did.
  • Sometimes the DM might want you to roll dice to resolve what you are doing (e.g the DM might ask you for a 'stealth check' to sneak past some guards for example). Most rolls will be on a d20 with some modifiers added to the result, but there are some exceptions.
  • Once you have those rules its fairly easy to pick up the rest and I and any other experienced players can help you along the way. If you do want to look at the rules in more detail you can look at the Basic Rules on the official D&D website.

How to sign up:

  • Simply post /join in this thread to join. Make sure you will be active enough to play and make sure you have read the rest of this post before joining.

Creating a character:

  • Since some players may be experienced and some not, I will give you the option of going through character creation step by step with me or doing it on your own and sending me the results. I will ask you that after you join.
  • Characters will start of at level 3.
  • All official dnd 5e content is allowed but not UA (don't worry about this if you are making your character with me).
  • Regardless of whether you create a character on your own or with me, you will need to discuss your backstory with me. It doesn't need to be much, just some basic information about that character, why your character is travelling east with the rest of the group, and any important class related stuff (if you are a cleric we will probably need to discuss who you worship ect.). If you are an unusual race or subclass we may need to also discuss that.

Current Players:

  1. DJVoxel (iso)
  2. TheLastEvangelist (iso)
  3. sunfirejr (iso)
  4. Bluedetroyer (iso)
  5. cupcakeaj2 (iso)

Waiting to play (PM me if you want to play):

  1. Whatsuppeople (Creating character with help from me)
  2. BRVR (Creating character on own)

Stopped Playing:

  1. Cenvil2 (Dissappeared during character sign-ups, has not yet responded whether they want to make a character and join later, so I guess the answer is probably no)
  2. ScorpioDiAngelo (iso) (Seems to have nuked their account with no warning half way through the prologue, probably not coming back)
  3. Blackajack (iso)

Character Descriptions:

    Orvius (DJVoxel):
Spoiler: Orvius stands at about 5'9," with an average build. He has fair skin with a slight reddish tinge, brown-red rust colored hair, and gold eyes without pupils or sclerae. His right horn protrudes about an inch from his forehead, while his left is an inch longer,. Both are misshapen and curve towards the sky, clashing with the softness of the rest of his facial features.
    Haxiris (Blackajack):
Spoiler: Haxiris is a just-mature copper dragonborn. Most of her body is covered with the copper colour of her scales with exception to her feet, which have striking hues of green from water exposure, 'rusting' her scales. Parts of her waist, shoulders and arms are wrapped in tight woven cloth with various dull metal ornaments for minor blessings are wrapped around this cloth that layers her body. There is still a good 40% of her body that is skin visible. A spear is interwoven to her back, among her other necessities.

As a backup, I do have a picture but it's unfortunately male, has a shield and the clothing is wrong. Even so, it's somewhat accurate:

    Image

    Silas (TheLastEvangelist):
Spoiler: He's tall, pale, and blonde with blue eyes. He loves to wear furs and he's pretty skinny. He has a sharp nose and jawline along with long arms. Despite being a noble, the only jewelry he wears is an armband and a necklace made of black beads.
    Zanaxe (sunfirejr):
    Spoiler: Blue Male Tiefling 5"11
    Ayereon (ScorpioDiAngelo):
Spoiler: Six feet, three inches tall, weighs 170 pounds. Skin is pale white, and appears to glow slightly in the light. Wears a ring on the ring finger of the left hand. In the palm of the right hand, the symbol of the Stormlord (three lightning bolts converging on a single point) is permanently etched into the skin. When casting magic, this mark glows brightly and a blinding halo of fire appears above my head.
    Skamoso (BlueDestroyer):
Spoiler: Skamoso is a 6 foot 1 inch purple tiefling. He’s a bit thinner than average. He has horns, and his hair is black. His eyes aren’t actually black, they’re blue, but he keeps casting thaumturgy on them to turn them pure black. He usually wears his armor on all day, except when he sleeps, and wears normal clothes.
    Charlotte (cupcakeaj2):
Spoiler: Charlotte's a short 16 year old girl with blonde pigtails. She carries a teddy bear with her at all times and she wears normal everyday clothes. She has several paint marks on her arms because she likes drawing on herself and she also has a ribbon tied around her neck because decorations.

Postby squosher » Wed Feb 26, 2020 11:01 am

Setting Information:

Religion

Spoiler: Religion in general in this setting

There clearly is some kind of divine power, god or gods, as there are many clerics of different gods around and divine magic is reasonably common. However the gods are very distant, generally not interfering in world affairs other than through the actions of their clerics. This, and the fact that many religion’s histories contradict each other, despite having some similarities between them, leaves everyone in a situation a bit like the real world where there isn't really a way of being certain which (if any) religions are correct. Regardless of this, divine power still functions for all the different clerics, leading to many of the religions to become hostile to the others, believing that the other religions are using the power from their own god, or worse, the 'bad guys' in their religion.

Pantheons and Beliefs

While these are not all the pantheons in the world, these are some which might come into play. Some may have some relation to the story, some may be related to the players, and some may just be believed by people who are geographically close to where the story takes place.

    The All-Father:

There was a creator, the All-father who created the world. He also created five primordials to rule over the natural forces of the world. After this, the All-father left to work on other, distant worlds, leaving the earth and its inhabitants alone for a while. Over this time the primordials became more and more corrupted, harming the inhabitants of the world and ruining the masterwork the All-father had put into creating the world. When the All-father returned he was unhappy with this. He didn't want to interfere with his creation, so instead he appointed a young human woman to act as his mouthpiece. She, as the first priestess of the All-father, united the civilised races and banished the primordials from the world. From then on, the All-father accepted priests and priestesses, personally appointing one to the title of High-priest or High-priestess to this day.

Belief in the All-father is probably the most influential religion in the area. The main place where it is believed in is one of the nearby empires, in fact the one which resides to the opposite side of the mountain range you are currently travelling along the southern side of. That empire (which I will some point give a name to) is a theocracy led by the high priest/priestess of the All-father and the religious structure is embedded into its political structure. However that is not the only place where it is believed. It is the most common religion in the continent, with several minor variations of it also cropping up from place to place.

It is one of the more militant religions, perhaps due to its focus on the All-father helping to destroy evil. This means it often has conflicts with other religions, historically sometimes even resulting in wars between nations. Some people who believe in the All-father have problems with other races such as tieflings, with accusations of their ancestors being on the side of the primordials.

Generally the clerics of this religion are likely to be part of a larger organisation, whether it is the main one in the empire to the north of you or some splinter group.

The Stormlord (and the rest of his pantheon) (not finished):

(Abridged version) The stories are about a family of gods with a lot of fighting between them, and to stop somethign bad from happening the stormlord locked the rest away so they would battle with him forever rather than destroy the world or something.

The belief in the stormlord and the other gods seems to have originated off-continent and was brought here by foreign traders long ago. However, it now has a strong following among the population who have always lived here, especially among some of the more coastal regions. Possibly because of this, the main god in the pantheon, as far as most of the worshippers are concerned, is the stormlord, whether he was originally as important in the pantheon as he is now made out to be is unclear. Despite this there are also some clerics of other gods than the storm lord in the continent, but they are far less numerous than clerics of the stormlord.

Generally the roles priests and priestesses in this pantheon are passed down the family line, presumably originating from some of the traders of old who decided to stay here. Generally there isn’t any large scale organised religion, and the clerics are usually left to their own devices. Whilst there is dislike between clerics of opposing gods, they generally won’t go beyond criticisms and harsh words towards each other.

Whilst the clerics might be in support of a specific god, often the less fervent of worshipers is relevant to the problem they face. So for example if they are making a journey across the sea they may prey to the stormlord for safe passage. Or they may pray to other gods in the pantheon to help them with other things.

    Fey Worshipers (not finished):

Some people focus on spiritual worship of the fey. They worship fey spirits and their clerical powers come from them. There isn't really a unifying creation story just this belief set as it is mostly focused on smaller scale problems. This is only really believed in a few towns dotted around the swamps in Kraus and was probably influenced by Elven beliefs and the local fey creatures in the swamps.

    Elven Beliefs (not finished):

The elves believe in a 5 main gods and many lesser gods most of which are elven in appearance. These gods have complicated relations with each other, very similar to how alliegences in the feywild would work.

    Dwarven Pantheon (not finished)

The dwarves have an extremely large pantheon, with gods acting as patrons of smaller things.
    Dragonborn Beliefs (not finished)

Dragonborn and dragons believe in the great wyrm, who created the world and then left the world to its own devices, to let the worlds inhabitants decide for itself what happened on it. Then it left to make other worlds and is still doing that

Geography

Spoiler: Empires and Nations

    The Exalted Empire

On the northeastern side of the turnstone peaks is the biggest political power on the continent. It is a large theocratic empire ruled by a high-priest or high-priestess, supposedly appointed be the All-father. It is a highly militarised nation which has been involved in a number of wars in its past, especially with its northeastern neighbours. It is also economically powerful and does a lot of trade.

    Kingdom of Kraus

The Kingdom of Kraus was long ago a significant political power, one of the oldest kingdoms on the continent, but over a long time, its has fell behind the other nations to the point where it is almost insignificant. Its sources of income have dried up, and even its roads are beginning to fall under disrepair. Nethertheless the kingdom keeps hanging on, the king is still resonably popular among his people, and its borders are much the same as they have always been.

    Loridian Empire

Fairly large empire to the south of the Kingdom of Kraus. Fairly recently (i.e. in terms of hundreds of years ago) formed from the unification of severall smaller kindoms.

    Cities on the Amber Coast

Although they have no official treaties or pacts, the cities on the amber coast are aligned together by a number of informal agreements when the cities were originally being founded. While the cities originally became rich because of the largescale sale of amber, nowadays they make more from the trade which comes through the three major ports cities. The cities have been successful so far by staying out of politics between the empires and will likely continue to do so in the future.

    Neverlight

Built within a mountain, neverlight is one of the two major dragonborn cities to the south-west of the continent.

    Frostfall

Frostfall is the other major dragonborn city in the continent.

Other

    Rend (name still might change)

The name of the continent you are on.

    The Turnstone Peaks

The Turnstone Peaks are the largest mountain range in the continent. They bisect the landscape and split up many of the major political powers in the area.

    The Mountainfoot Path

The primary trade route between the east and west of the continent, the mountainfoot path traverses the southern foothiles of the Turnstone peaks.

    The Coastal Path

A path going along the Amber Coast between the Shimmersea and the Turnstone peaks. It continues the mountainfoot path and is the only easy way to get between the Exalted Empire and the empires and nations to the south of it. It frequently traveled by traders.

    The Amber Coast

The amber coast is the stretch of coastline where the shimmersea comes its closest to the turnstone peaks. It has a number of cities which became rich by mining the large amount of amber in the area. It also has some of the most beautiful beaches in the region.

    Kraussian Wetlands

The Kraussian Wetlands make up a significant portion of the Kingdom of Kraus. They are largely uninhabited although they do contain a few fairly isolated towns and villages in the less waterlogged areas.

    The Shimmersea

A sea to the east. It is a fairly calm sea and facilitates most of the waterborne trade, both within the continent and between contenents. The shimmersea connects to the Deepsea.

    The Deepsea

The Deepsea is the ocean to the south east of the continent. It goes between a few continents and encompasses most of the southern part of the world.

    The Deepsea Passage

      A trade route between continents.

[/list]

Historical Events

Spoiler: (All events are in chronological order)

Ancient History

The Founding of the Kraussian Kingdom

The Kraussian kingdom is the one of the oldest political powers around today. It was founded by the first king Kraus very long ago.

    The Long War

A long time ago there was a war known as the long war between the Kraussian kingdomand an kingdom that no longer exists in the place of a small part of where the loridian empire is now. The war had a large death toll due to the inhospitable landscape and the war lasted many years. Eventually the Kraussian kingdom won but it nethertheless set them back by years and they never really recovered to the strain on their economy and population. It is largely blamed for the decline of the Kingdom of Kraus.

    Founding of the Exalted Empire

The exalted empire was founded during a time when there were lots of small powers in the east of the continent. After some complex wars what was once a small territory managed to invade most of the other powers in the east.

The Decline of the Kraussian Kingdom

Over the centuries after that there were a series of small wars and rebellions which slowly shrunk the Kingdom of Kraus to its current size.

    The eastern wars

There have been a number of historic wars between the Exalted Empire and its more eastern neighbors, mostly over religion.

    Founding of the Loridian Empire

The loridian empire was founded in the collaberation of several warlords to take control of a sizable portion of land in the south-east.

Recent History

    Loridian Militarisation

The Loridian Empire is bolstering its army and building more siege equipment. There are fears they might be planning to invade the Kraussian Kingdom.

    Death of a priest

The high priest of the All-father has died a few months ago. He was getting old and died of natural causes. A successor has not been chosen and a council is temporarily ruling until one is, as is usually tradition in the Exalted Empire.

Size 1 text to push title down
Prologue - Lukhal's Request

The sun continues to sink in the sky as your caravan continues its journey through the hills. As the day gets colder what was once a pleasant breeze picks up a little, making the trees ahead lean a bit to the side, a few leaves blowing off and floating to the ground.

"Not long now."

A loud voice comes from the front of the caravan, with a dwarven accent. The voice comes from a male dwarf you have come to know as Urdur is acting as a guide to the area.

"Harrowhill is just beyond this forest. We should be there in little more than an hour."

He goes back to talking to the figure next to him, Borin, a human man in charge of the caravan's security as you continue your journey towards and then into the forest.

You may now post.

Haxiris is content tying, undoing and retying the cloth around her legs. As she does, she quietly hums a nameless tune.

You effortlessly play tune after tune.

The male red dragonborn who has been on the caravan for most of the journey looks to you. He is one of the more noticable figures on the caravan with you. He is taller than most, and is built well, and his red scales stand out amongst the other passengers. You have exchanged a few words with him but you don't know much about him.

"I've been meaning to ask, where did you learn to play like that? That's some talent you have there."

You keep an eye out, you cannot see any good branches on the few trees by the side of the road, but once you get into the forest you might have more luck (I'm saving the roll until then).

You take a look around you. You don't see anything out of the ordinary, execept for perhaps for the interesting mix of races who seem to be on this caravan. You count three tieflings in total, hardly a common occurance in these parts, or even anywhere. There are also two Dragonborn, one copper coloured and one red, and then the rest of the caravan is made up of fairly common races.

(also it shouldn't be investigation if you aren't touching anything, it should be perception if you are looking at what people have on them or insight to judge their character, but you would have got the same roll for perception anyway)

(It's happening now, i'm trying to make sure everyone has had a chance to post before anything happens)

You see that one of the tieflings, who was playing the lute before, is talking to the red dragonborn. You can't catch what they are saying.

At this point the caravan begins to make it's way into the forest. It is getting into the later afternoon now and there is probably only about an hour of sunlight left. The path is surrounded by trees, and you can hear some birds singing songs.

She turns to face the assumed bard and smiles. "I was never that good with music. Supposed I found someone who was. Or at least earlier."

"I'm guessin' that was you too, before. Maybe teach me some time?"

You make a good effort, but there is only so much you can do with a lute. The birds continue in their songs.
I usually go by Stereokuma in-game.

As you continue down the path and farther into the woods, you cannot help but notice that the forest is alive with nature. You see birds flying between trees, insects crawling or flittng around and the occasional the occasional blur of orange-red as a squirrel scampers away from the caravan.

(Just so you know nothing big is going to happen for a while because I want everyone to have a chance to post and because its pointless starting anything now as I will go to sleep in the next hour or so.)

Charlotte sits inside the caravan and looks out at the sky, shivering a little.

"We're going to make it there before sunset, right? I feel cold."

Ayereon:Pristum ir gaires biora vensi

Suddenly, a sweet, familiar scent washes over Haxiris and a puff of wind blows her hair about her face. Ayereon turns his focus back to the forest, still singing.

Haxiris stops to smell the sweet air, as if to relapse into a pleasant memory. "...Fresh grass amongst a mown plain. It's a good smell..."

Haxiris appears intriguied; "Oh, those words of yours. What language are they; I certainly haven't heard've them."

(what kind of check do I make for insults? Insight? that's my guess) [16]
"Oh so would you would not rather a person of my descendants learns such a tongue? tzarafar"
his last word switch to a different tongue, draconic in this instance
