Review Roles Here

Postby Nellyfox » Wed Feb 17, 2016 4:41 pm

Sometimes role idea threads do not go so well. Some are more popular than others. Sometimes Nelly gets extremely lazy with updating the Masterthread (sorry not sorry).

A lot of people in the past have offered role reviewing services. To prevent fifty threads existing on the board at one time, there's going to be just this one thread, open to all.

Rules:
  • Post the role card of a role you want review. Do not link your thread, advertising threads is against the rules after all.
  • Be serious about reviewing. Do not post comments like "Very nice role 10/10." or "I like it, it should be in the game!". Make your comments contain substance, be thoughtful. If we feel your post does not provide much of anything it will be removed.
  • Criticism is expected. By posting your role here you acknowledge that reviews may be harsh. These posts normally may not be reported for harassment, however a line still exists. If you're unsure at what is or isn't harassment, report the post or PM a moderator.
  • Only post your own roles. Joke roles also may not be posted.
  • If your role idea is popular (5+ pages in original thread), please do not post it. Chances are unless you spammed your own thread you've already get a nice amount of review.
  • Long posts belong in spoilers. Please, help reduce the length of pages.

Why is this a rule? Personally, I find it more effective for others' roles to be reviewed by others so they get more community feedback.

Is this limited to only new role ideas or can you post changes to an existing role, such as a Disguiser buff?

Anyway, I'll be reviewing as well but I probably won't be active nor will I be following this thread actively so don't expect me to do much if you want your idea reviewed here.

Because it's not yours. Don't touch it if it doesn't belong to you.

If you post buffs/nerfs here, sure I guess. They're better off in their own thread but as long as discussion is kept to a minimum, sure.

Well in that case, I'll get the ball rolling, hopefully not messing up. Here's my Investigator's Results Change/Nerf:
Spoiler:
  • Your target has confidential information. They must be a Jailor, Mayor, or Spy.
  • Your target likes to accompany others. They must be an Escort, Vampire Hunter, or Consort.
  • Your target makes actions carefully. They must be an Investigator, Arsonist, or Consigliere.
  • Your target works with weapons. They must be a Vigilante, Veteran, or Mafioso.
  • Your target is seemingly deceptive. They must be a Amnesiac, Vampire, or Framer.
  • Your target has a large interest in death. They must be a Medium, Executioner, or Janitor.
  • Your target has a strange hobby. They must be a Retributionist, Transporter, or Jester. (Need help here)
  • Your target has a dominating presence. They must be a Sheriff, Werewolf, or Blackmailer.
  • Your target takes note of others' actions. They must be a Lookout, Witch, or Forger.
  • Your target has many experiences with blood. They must be a Doctor, Serial Killer, or Disguiser.
  • Your target likes to stay incognito. They must be a Bodyguard, Survivor, or Godfather.

-Help with flavor text is appreciated, especially with Doctor/SK/Disguiser and Medium/Executioner/Janitor.
-Note that I won't be responding back to reviews here. If I do though, they'll be restricted to PMs.

(My actual thread may be 5 pages long but about a page and a half of it is merely back-and-forth between me and orange and the feedback before or during that was about previous versions of the results. Need feedback on this specific version. A mod may delete this post if they feel like my thread is popular for some reason. If it's for some other reason, such as having to use the format even with role changes, then okay.)

Re: Review Roles Here

Postby Jerme » Tue Feb 23, 2016 2:40 am

First of all: I kept the old parts in Strikethrough for others to see my previous thoughts about the roles and for me to keep track of the changes I have done additionally to have the older version of the roles still available.

Now to your questions:
Lost Spirit
Spoiler: Q: So kinda like a bodyguard, but instead it doesn't protect the target? It just scared them away?
A: It does not protect. If the target is attacked, both target and Lost Spirit will die. If it is killcapable (and killing when this role is town) the hit is directed on the Spirit in stead of the target (Jailor still kills their target, Veteran alert still works as intended)

Q: Get the killer a message when the Lost Sprit is killed?
A: Yes, see notifications: "A strange power has forced your hand."

Q: This is after you won right?
A: Yes the Lost Spirit wins with everyone once it succeeded, I should edit that in the OP.

Q: So it's unique because it have night immunity or does the full imminity mean something else?
A: It was once a thought because the it grants full night immunity until the morning after the Spirits success was announced

Q: So the town sees this, after the killed and Lost Spirit died or after the Lost Spirit died because the word "They" makes me confuced.
A: The notification "They died with a smile on their face" is counted as cause of death in the deathannouncement. This is occurring when the Spirit has archived its victory. Example: Zoroark died last night. They died with a smile on their face." Well I might have to rework/reword this announcement a bit, because the repetition of died bugs me slightly~ I hope I could lift your confusion with that.

Thank your for this review Lucas. It seems I have to move a couple of information to a better place. I hope I will get to that today.

Ghost

Spoiler: Q: Can I know the reason of this, is it so the Witch, can't use it on herself?
A: I picture the Ghosts ability has to have a higher abilitypriority than the Transporter, since it does ignore their roleblock immunity. Since the TP is immune to a witches meddling, because of their priority, the Ghost has to be as well. But the Transporter is still able to swap the original target.

Regarding the selfvisit/selfprotection: I took it in because of the reason of every existing protective roles (Doctor/Bodyguard) have some sort of selfprotection. So I could remove this part pretty easy.

Q: So if the Werewolf attack the Ghost or the Ghost scared someone with the Werewolf away. It will die on the next night right?
A: I should reword/change it. I was meant as the Werewolf being able to scent trace the Ghost on every night, if they meet each other --> attacking (full moon)/visiting (on odd nigths). The Werewolf will kill the Ghost once they meet each other again after the scent was traced (Ghost still protects their target from the Werewolf). I have to rework this interaction a bit...

Q: Why can't the Jailor execute the Ghost, sure it's logic on movies ... but why?
A: The Jailor will be protected by the ghost when jailed (and thus thew Jailor is asleep --> unable to use their ability) Conversation will still take place.

Q: So if the Ghost is jailed, no1 can't visit him right?
A: This is a relic from the tiem wher I gave the ghost more power (cannot die to blocking WW/SK) and thus having a limited amount of visits. This way the Jailor was still protected, without the Ghost losing a charge. I have to remove/strikethrough that)

Q: So does that mean that the Ghost is dead on the second full moon? so not, why have the ghost die on the second interaction of the werewolf and not the first?
A: It was meant, that once the Werewolf has traced the Ghosts scent, the Ghost will be killed by the Werewolf when they meet each other again. So meeting a Werewolf is not an automatic death in the next day or that one after it.

Other Consig results
- Death did not stop your target from living. They must be a Ghost
- Your target frightens people. They must be a Ghost
- Your target cannot pass on. They must be a Ghost
Which would you prefer?

Comment: I don't think that the "Having Slept" message is necessary. And that the "second meet with Werewolf messages" are necessary.
A: The more I think about it, the better it would be if I remove the Werewolf-notifications. This reveals the Werewolf tothe Ghost which would be an indirect nerf for the poor puppy. I included the sleeping message, because the Ghosts target has a special kind of roleblocking which pierces their possible immunity. Now that I see the notifications again, I think there is the need of receiving a message of being killed by the Serial Killer the Ghost visited and the Serial Killer killing the Ghost due to being blocked.

Thank you for showing me that the role is not displayed as I intended. I attempt to update it today as well.

I am grateful for having this review, it is very helpful and I will get to updating my ideas again. I hope I have answered all your questions and did not confuse you more. Do not hesitate to ask more if there is still something which needs clarification.

Postby Jerme » Tue Feb 23, 2016 3:38 am

Well the "They" is the usual deathannouncement, to stay genderless as far as I remember. So this pronoun is in a singular use here --> The message only affects the Lost Spirit.
Lost Spirit was killed by Witch --> They were banished by a Witch (--> lose)
Lost Spirit was killed by beign directly targetted (example Jailor) --> They were executed by the Jailor
Lost Spirit succeeded --> They died with a smile on their face / They passed on wearing a smile | I go with the last one, but for comparison I use the old one as well
Is this understnadable?
Sure I do want to know if one of these roles needs to receive more balancing, that why I requested a review~

I have updated the thread now. Is it good like that?
About the stories: I origionally created one role, with having two concepts (original name: Ghost) and could nto decide which to take. Becuase of that I wrote similar stories for each concept, since one was planned to be scrapped, but I decided to take both and change the name of one suggestion.

Thanks, Nelly, for creating this thread.

So, basically, I will be reviewing roles as well whenever I feel like it. So dont ask me to do it, or if you insist, send me a PM and if I feel like it, I´ll write a review.

Expect me to not put on any white gloves - if your role concept is utter shit, thats what you will hear from me. Or maybe I will just not waste my time on it alltogether.

Huh? Not sure where you even got that from his post. Having a hard time finding that.

I only ask that you do not post roles for other people as it's their role so they have full responsibility over it.

I'll do both versions, for an extra $100
SamuelJackson1972 wrote:

Flavor could use work, but we're looking for balance so this doesn't matter right now.
Abilities: Kill someone every odd night, becoming them, and getting their investigative results
debatable: you also get the abilities of the victim the next night. (non-power town only)Ok, this is very good. Remove the debatable and you're silver. Just how would this work with last wills, as in the original role tournament you called it a "neutral killing disguiser". Would it deal with the same problems Disguiser has? Address/fix this and you'll be golden.
Attributes: Night immunity. Investigative result swap.Good.
Invest results: Your target is a possessor! (First night only, not like this matters anyway)It matters if they're lucky, but it's fine.
Sheriff: Your target is a possessorWould this go through Invest swap or no? If yes, this is quite OP(for Sheriff) and if not it seems OP(as only lookout can find, but needs to be smart)Also ya need consign :/
Goal: Kill everyone who would appose you.

Additional Information:
When you kill your victim, who you were dies. (if you killed a spy and you kill someone else later, the "spy" dies)Ok, ok.
Backstory: (by Rossendale, http://www.blankmediagames.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=29644)
Spoiler: "A being of utter evil and corruption, the Possessor takes complete control of their victims' body, crushing their soul and dominating their consciousness. From then on, this foul creature controls the body of its' host like a puppeteer, using them to gather intelligence, protect itself or blend in with the other town members. When the time is ripe, this creature will desert its' old body and seek a new host, inhabiting it in much the same way as the last. This monster was brought to life through a dark ritual performed by a sorcerer of wicked desires. This sorcerer sought new power, and started delving into tomes of black, wicked magic. He learned of the arcane arts under the tutelage of the Retributionist. The teacher wanted his pupil to use this knowledge for good purposes, but the Possessor soon became greedy and overcome with an insatiable hunger for more power. He pressed his teacher to show him more, but the Retributionist adamantly refused. This is when the Possessor started harboring a deep hatred of his mentor. He felt like he was being put down, patronised, not respected. This is when the Possessor decided that he would take up his own, private study. He started frequenting the Salem library, reading from every tome that hinted at or referenced the arcane arts. However, this did not sate him and he soon started breaking into his master's private study, reading from the dark tomes that he had hidden within. In particular, one spell had caught his eye. It allowed the caster to dominate the soul and mind of a target, and render their body subject to the caster's will. The Possessor set out to the nearby woods one night to perform this ritual. However, the Retributionist noticed that he was not in his chambers and rushed out to see where he was. Unfortunately, by the time he got to the woods it was already too late. The ritual had come to an end. However, the spell had a horrible side effect. It reaped the consciousness and soul of the Possessor, stealing away all of his memory and humanity. The Possessor took a step forward, reaching out towards the Retributionist. The man screamed out in pain, then shrivelled and fell to the floor. The Possessor's body fell too, and after a while the Retributionist's body stood up once more. However, it was the Possessor, now nothing more than a maleficent beast that wanted only destruction. He set out towards the town, his new victims already in mind."
Version 2:
Spoiler: Name: Possessor
Alignment: Neutral Chaos
Summary: A possessor who wants to kill everyone in their path
Abilities: You can kill one person, becoming them.

Attributes: investigator result swap. You must wait 3 days after killing someone to kill again.NO. Also missing goal.

Additional information:
Once you kill someone, you get to use their abilities and get their invest results.
This doesn't work for jailors, retributionists, and mayors.
The sheriff will still see you as the possessor

Original Version: 8.5/10

Pretty balanced. Just specify/fix a few things and you're golden :D
Chaos Version:3/10

Missing a goal. Can't really judge from there.

Also somebody review my Arcanist

I know a results list was posted earlier, but i'd like to post another. This is just a small, simple balance for investigator.
Spoiler: Bodyguard, Jailor or Werewolf - You target can kill without fail.
Doctor or Serial Killer - Your target is good with knives.
Sheriff, Executioner or Vampire - Your target seeks power.
Investigator or Consigliere - Your target gathers information.
Spy, Lookout or Blackmailer - Your target works with secret information.
Escort, Consort or Witch - Your target is a manipulator.
Medium, Retributionist or Janitor - Your target works with dead bodies.
Mayor, Transporter or Godfather - Your target rules people's actions.
Veteran, Vigilante or Mafioso - Your target owns weapons.
Vampire Hunter, Disguiser or Jester - Your target seems very strange.
Survivor, Amnesiac or Arsonist - Your target is a loner.
Forger, Framer or framed - Your target is good with documents.

I allow everyone to review all of my roles/Investigator overhaul ^_^

My issue with that one is Framer/Forger because Forger can be used better, Escort/Consort/Witch does not give Witch any fakeclaims, Mayor/Transporter/Godfather is the same case, Disguiser's only way not to get executed is to come up with a way to say Vampires are in the game, and most Arsonists will die after a night of no remembering.

@Surgeon Not the most in-depth, but it can side with any faction, most likely against the town with Vigilantes, and cannot be an easy kingmaker unless in given situations.

Sheriff: Your target is a possessorWould this go through Invest swap or no? If yes, this is quite OP(for Sheriff) and if not it seems OP(as only lookout can find, but needs to be smart)Also ya need consign :/ the sheriff would be able to always find them, but the consig won't, they will get the results of their victim, also the person who you last were dies, meaning you get to control the last wills, but do not clean the person

Version 2:

Arcanist
Spoiler:
ChubbyMooshroom9 wrote:Role:Arcanist

This is something that bug me, sure the name is something I have never seen before. But everytime I look at it, it feels like an Arsonist clone for me. From the first look it's not really impressive in my eyes. -1 Creativity-Really?
>.>
Ability: On odd nights, you can select to kill one living person. However, on even nights, you may select a dead person and kill anyone who has visited them in the past.

That is one of the most detail Abilities I have ever seen +2 understandable +1 creativity
Attributes:

-You cannot kill your victim's killers.

Seems oke +1 understandble +1 balance
-The Bodyguard cannot stop your attacks.
Oke I can see why, I guess???
-When you perform your trauma and kill more than three people, you cannot perform your basic attack(suggested by Kirize12 on original idea post)
Oke that seems balanced +2 balance
-Your trauma goes through Night Immunity.
I know that from the ability but thanks for saying it anyway +1 understandable
Example for Last Attribute:

We have Players Bob, SK, Arcanist, Doctor, Godfather.

Sk->Bob
Doctor->Bob
Arcanist->Doctor
Godfather->Bob

Bob attacked by SK!
HEaled!
Attacked by maf!(dead)
Doctor dies!

Next night, Arcanist->Bob.

SK dies as the SK didn't kill Bob, GF did.

This is what's bugging me "You cannot kill your victim's killers". I'm probaly dumb but what I see is that your cannot kill the victim killer, so if the victim is Bob why can you kill the GF (killer) then. Can you awnser this for me please? -1 understandableYou didn't kill the GF, you killed the SK as they failed in killing Bob.

Special Attributes:

-Night Immunity
-Detection Immunity(Sheriff)

Nothing wrong here +1 balance +1 understandable

Goal: Kill all who would oppose you.

Seems like a simple goal (as in not really creative), still I think it could be better. Exemple: Goal: Live to see everyone burn. Goal: Live to see everyone electrocuted. -1 creativity

How about "Get the revenge you so desire against these people.
Wins with:Survivor,Witch,, and Arcanists.

Nothing wrong here +1 understandable
Investigative Results:

Sheriff-Your target is not suspicious.
Investigator-Your target works with dead bodies. They must be a Medium,Janitor, or an Arcanist!
Consigliere-Your target finely tuned to the whims of dark magic. They must be an Arcanist!

Seems like a good invest results, if you add orange invest result then you are golden (HA get it). +1 creativity +1 balance, +1 understandable
Lore:
As a child, he grew up in Salem. He led a normal life, until the night his mother was taken to another's house. Her place was taken by the Serial Killer, who scared the child out of his wits. He held a knife up to him, and laughed maniacally, plotting his next kill. He eventually decided on the boy's mother. Upon discovery, the boy burst into tears, and ran out. The Serial Killer failed to stop him.

He then told the town's Bodyguard about this, who refused to risk his life for a mere woman like his mother. He shoved the child away, going to guard the mayor. He then ran to the doctor, who agreed to help him, but was jailed that night. The distraught child found the transporter, asking him whom he had transported. He pointed to his house and the Serial Killer's. The child ran as fast as he could towards the Serial Killer's house.

Upon arrival, he saw the Serial Killer stabbing, torturing, and other brutal and inhumane things to his mother. He only heard screams of agony, and then a sudden silence. The floorboards creaked. The Serial Killer turned around, covered in blood. He shoved the child to the floor and sliced his stomach. The child screamed in agony, but nobody cared. He straggled home, and made it. He went to the cabinet with cloth and tied it around the wound, passing out soon after. The next morning, the town inspected the dead body of his mother. The boy, with tears, walked outside. Everybody tried to comfort him, especially the doctor and bodyguard. However, he knew their game. The townies weren't worried until it was them. The mayor hogged all the guards for himself, leaving innocent towns people to die. He screamed " I hate you all! I hope you all die!" The Mafia tried recruiting him, but he didn't care. He wanted two things: his mother and revenge against the town. He knew the retriboutinist wouldn't bat an eye to his pleas, vowing only to resurrect the jailor or mayor. Traumatized by this experience, he fled.

He ran into the woods, practicing the arcane arts. Here he met the town's witch, and promised to help destroy the town. Then, years later, the now adult boy and witch viewed the town. Their souls boiled with anger, and they vowed they would stop at nothing to destroy this town.

Mayor games = the reason why this role exist, lol. +2 creativity +1 understandable

Achievements:

My Childhood Dream- Win 1 Game(5 coins)
Allies in Dark Arts- Win with another Arcanist(10 coins)
Childhood Friend-Win with a witch(10 coins)
FEEL MY PAIN!!!!-Traumatize.(5 coins)
Zap- Attack someone normally(5 coins)
Porygon Syndrome- Wipe out 5 players in one turn(25 coins)
Doomsday-Kill a Jailor(10 coins)
Idealistic-Be the last man standing(25 coins)
Revenge-Win 5 games(5 coins)
Arcane Master-Win 10 games(10 coins)
The Devil's Wizard-Win 25 games(25 coins)

The achivements are oke, but since Kirize suggestion. You should take this one off "Porygon Syndrome- Wipe out 5 players in one turn(25 coins)". For the rest it's really good most of achievements sence with the story +1 creativity +1 understandbleOk, so remove that one. Got it.
Some extra side notes:

-Visits would count as to what a Lookout would see.

Thanks for the extra detail +1 balance

After I read the whole role, I think this role needs downsides when it comes with killing a living person. This is like Serial killer but with an extra ability. With sk you have to kill Jailor and Escort, that is 1 of the downsides from the SK. On this role, I only see downsides on this ability "dead person and kill anyone who has visited them in the past". -1 balance +1 understandble Do you have any suggestions for downsides that aren't an SK clone? I'm looking for feedback. :)

Creativity = 5/10
Balance = 5/10
Understandable = 9/10
-----------------------------------------------
(5+5+9):3*10 = 63%

To say it short, the role is good but I don't really think this is well balanced enough. And have some problems with a little details. But further of all, I find this is average role but there are some things that needs to be tweeked.

Holy shit I did better than I thought XD
