Purpose of the Lounge

Disclaimer: This is not a joke post. It is only in the lounge because it is meant to be less formal than off topic discussions posts and also regards the lounge. Please only reply if you have at least one coherent and relevant sentence to say.

Right now, save for the stickied threads and those from 2014 that have at least 50-100 pages, the main purpose of the lounge seems to be to just hit your head on the keyboard and submit whatever random combination of letters you make. Those posts that do have some substance are generally sarcastic and/or jokes, and some people that want to have a legitimate but informal conversation get memey replies. To me, the ideal purpose of the lounge should be to talk about informal stuff not related to ToS. To me, off topic discussion should ideally be for formal topics such as debates. The lounge should be for topics such as talking about a new milestone that you reached in another game. Nothing too formal, but also not meant to be a joke. This threads purpose is to discuss the lounge's purpose, whether it be for serious but informal conversations or just for memes.

Even in the summer it use to be more like what you're describing and I agree with your opinion. Starting after Christmas there has been a surge of idiots for lack of a better word who are just trying to get attention. They know who they are so no names needed but I do agree it has become a problem. I always though of Off-Topic as having more formal threads including debate threads but also just having stimulating opinions being shared. The lounge should be for threads that are fun, like post a picture of yourself or discussing types of hobbies.

I agree with your opinion; I don't think it was like this back when I came to the Lounge.

I'm tempted to post something in the Off-Topic Discussions just because of the wave of users that came post for kicks.

That was the idea yes.
But the description of the lounge and off topic combined just lead to everyone assuming its shitpost central.

This spam stuff happens at least once a year, this year was just messier.

If I recall correctly it was to satisfy two parties. One group that wanted to make jokes in serious topics and the other wanted to make serious topics and expect people to actually talk about the thread at hand. Another consideration was to separate those making gag/joke threads and those actually making serious threads. Also, posting to get you're post count up was a pet peeve of certain users.

Do we still have that problem? Yes
Do people care about it? People care, but not as much as they did back then


People want things to get better, but nobody want's to change. People want to keep the lounge, but they don't want the lounge to be... well everything that it is.

Or just promote quality and be more strict with the rules. People will always complain so who cares. The staff have always had issues with second chances and stuff and I'm sure it extends here too.

OP admits to ignoring/not participating in the Lounge for months, immediately makes a thread straight after about how the Lounge quality decrease personally affects him. SeemsGood.

TBH the complaints are probably due to people feeling like they're being unfairly punished as a whole because two users abuse their privileges. If it was me I'd retract the one-thread rule and just make excessive thread making punishable with a warning/temporary ban, but it's obviously not my choice here. Either way things should calm down after the tantrums are finished.

There will always be someone out there to complain, and berate the mods for even the littlest change.
