In an essay from 1877 titled “The Fixation of Belief,” the American philosopher C. S. Peirce describes four ways people go about settling their beliefs. 1) Some people like to hold on tenaciously to what they have been taught; Peirce calls that “the method of tenacity”. 2) Some people prefer to submit to someone else’s authority—for example, a sacred book, or a revered politician, or perhaps a member of the family; Peirce calls that “the method of authority”. 3) Other people prefer to believe what makes them feel good or comfortable; that Peirce calls “the a priori method”. 4) Still others prefer to test and to experiment—to withhold their belief until they have experimental evidence in its favor; Peirce calls that “the method of science”.
