Pokemon

Postby SarahSaurus » Fri Mar 18, 2016 10:47 pm

Not a huge pokemon nerd, but occasionally I get in the mood to play it. Right now I'm playing SoulSilver and trying to defeat the ghost gym leader in Ecruteak city. AND IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY.

Basically, gym leader has this Gengar that kept wrecking all of my pokemon, until I realized this random Raticate I caught works well against it. So now I bring out Raticate when the Gengar is released, but I've been in this battle Raticate vs Gengar for like 15 minutes now and it is literally the stupidest fight ever. Basically, Gengar uses hypnosis, and Raticate falls asleep. Then I use Awakening, and wake him up. Then for a while Gengar would use Sucker Punch (a move which only works if the target is preparing an attack. Which I'm not, because I'm using Awakening), and it failed, and then he would use Hypnosis again before I can even attack. Then he ran out of Sucker Punches and now he just keeps using Hypnosis. I have used literally 13 Awakenings so far in this fight, and it is going nowhere. It's just Hypnosis, Awakening, Hypnosis.

Edit: I have now used all 15 of my Awakenings and have none left. Luckily, it seems like Hypnosis is the only move Gengar has that actually works against my Raticate, so he can't kill Raticate while he's sleeping.

Edit: So I killed Gengar. And now he's using a Haunter who just uses Hypnosis and then Dream Eater or Nightmare and it's killing all my pokemon. This is ridiculous.

Ahhhh, good old Morty. The original troll Gym Leader (aside from Whitney. I really hate her.)

As Kmenx has suggested, dark types are your best friend here. But the problem with that is that you don't really have access to that many dark types in the first half of the game :/ In fact, there's really only one; Umbreon. You don't have access to the other three base ones (Murkrow, Sneasel and Houndour) until Kanto unless you trade for some :| Which always did seem stupid to me...

I can't remember exactly how I beat him before, but there's a few things you can try;

1) Stock up on literally like several dozen awakening and just try to power through. In other words, keep doing what you're doing.

2) Get the Eevee from Bill and train it up to be an Umbreon and it learns some dark type moves. Even if it gets hypnotized, ghost type moves like Nightmare are barely effective while psychic moves like Dream Eater shouldn't work at all.

3) Do what Oliy said; Since Ghost types don't affect normal types, get a team full of Raticates, train them until they learn the dark move, Crunch, at level 24 (I think) and then try again.

Can you get Chesto berries by that point? If you can, you might want to give your pokemon those.

I never really had an issue with Morty.

Could pick up a Hoothoot because it has insomnia so it cannot be put to sleep.

I completely forgot Hoothoot had the insomnia ability  And since Hoothoot is part normal-type AND can learn psychic moves, that's an excellent choice!

I am doing a platinum playthrough with a team that contains kricketune, chimecho and an underleveled lopunny.
I have been stuck at the steel gym for a few days.

Yeah, but I am sticking to my chosen team.
So yeah, lopunny grinding is "fun" (also why the heck does it cost so much to teach it firepunch)

What other Pokemon do you have aside from Kricketune, Lopunny and Chimecho?
Why does it cost so much? Because the game likes to be a dick.

Hmm....well, if one of those HM slaves knows surf, then that could be useful against the leader, as two of his Pokemon are part steel and part ground or rock, which water is good against.

If not, then good luck with that lopunny.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I did end up beating him, but that was just such an obnoxious fight. I was using Raticate because he had dark-type moves, and I didn't have any dark-type pokemon. If I had died again, I was going to go grab my Drowzee because I realized he has that insomnia ability.

I found Whitney and Morty were easy to beat with your own Gastly family although I think it might be different in remakes.
If this is your first time in Johto, go east next.

Never had trouble with Morty or any of the other Gym leaders (whitney took an hour inside of home depot to take care of but I won the battle after a while). elite four never got me either. don't ask me why but I found the gyms in X/Y harder than HG/SS

Used to really like Pokemon, haven't been too involved with it until early last year.

Picked myself up a copy of Omega Ruby, played through like 5 gyms, haven't set aside the time to complete it yet.

I don't know what else to add about the subject at hand but, Gen 2 is my favorite of all generations.
Absol is my favorite Pokemon, despite not being that great.
And I plan on getting involved with Gen 7 after I finish Omega Ruby, leaning more towards Moon right now.

Yeeeeeeeeeah.....As I found out during a Nuzlocke I did, thanks to Miltank having the Scrappy ability, it's most powerful move, Stomp, can hit ghost types, despite being a normal type move.

That bitch took down two of my best Pokemon, my Haunter and Ariados  Though, Ariados had the last laugh because it had poisoned her

koolkatgold wrote:don't ask me why but I found the gyms in X/Y harder than HG/SS

Personally, the only XY gym I had trouble with was Grant, because of his Amaura spamming thunder wave on me and my Pokemon being under-levelled -_-
It couldn't stand up to my over-levelled Pokemon on the second run, though XD

Ahhh, same. I played a lot as a kid, during like the silver/gold/crystal and ruby/sapphire games, and then in high school I got SoulSilver for the nostalgia, and I rarely play it, but sometimes you just get in that pokemon mood. I would LOVE to have one of the new ruby/sapphire games cause I really liked them back in the day, but I just can't justify spending like ~$40 on a game that I'll play maybe for 2 weeks a year.
