This might sound like a stupid question, but did you remember to increase resources to make it enough for a 4 player world? I know a couple of friends who kept starving to death because they were all fighting over the food and resources meant for a single player world.

do you spend the first 2-3(maybe 4) days exploring? Me and my sister, usually have plenty of food, due to collecting all the berry bushes we can.

Another trick for getting food is starting pig wars, tame 3 or 4 pigs from one village, go to another, click to attack a pig,but back out before you hit him.All the pigs should start fighting, and you can slip right in and get all the pig skin (for more houses) and the meat to eat.

As for the strategy, I'm familiar with it, but it's kind of hard to get things done when there aren't enough axes for everyone after the first day.

From what your saying, it sounds like your group is too large, causing people to starve to death. I would suggest splitting up into groups of 2's (with one group of 3) so you will stop fighting over the amount of food you have in an area.

another way to solve your food problem, is using Wickerbottom. With her books, she can regrow berry bushes instantly, but at the cost of some sanity.

she also gets some advanced crating early.

and she has more books, like one will summon birds, another will put animals to sleep (complementing the bird ability), my personal favorite will summon lightning to strike threats around you (i am pretty sure she has more magic books). BUT KEEP IN MIND THESE ALL COST SOME SANITY.

just make one of those flower hats, and it will slow down your sanity loss at night, and raise it during the day, and in DST and Don't stave giant edition thing, you can get a pet called glommers, he works like chester, you hold his flower and he will follow you, and when you stand next to him you gain sanity. If you stand by him at night, you will actually still gain sanity.

The frogs are annoying, but easily dealt with, imo.

Those fucking Walruses, though.....Never succeeded in killing one, and I killed a freaking Deerclops.

if you get a pig, or two to distract the dogs, its not too bad.

I find it funny how the tiny creatures like penguins and frogs are more deadly than the monsters like deerclops and the tree giant :p

Use a campfire to cook your food. Don't stay in the dark without some sort of light source or you'll regret it.

Yeah, as Alzar has said, staying out at night with no light source is suicide.

Gather materials for making lights as soon as you start. Sticks and grass are important, as you can make torches in a pinch, but the most important is to find some flint so you can make axes to collect logs for a campfire. However, fires made this way will burn down to nothing, whereas you can use stones to make a permanent fire pit, which can be used over and over again and even show up on your map.

Also, watch out for shadow hands, they try to extinguish your fire. You'll hear a music box when they spawn and can be driven away by just walking towards them, eventually despawning at dawn.
