SUDDENLY the door exploded inwards in a splintery blizzard of shards as the vigilante strode into the room, his left boot still smoking from the incredible impact.

“Alright you bastards,” he growled, looking at the fourteen horrified individuals before him in turn with a palatable cocktail of loathing and dread, “I'm the god-damned vigilanto-danto and I'm here to make your lives a living misery until one of you 'fesses up to being a good for nothin' sack of..”

He spun on his heel with a flair of his short riding cloak and contemplated his words.

“..Well nevermind. I'm, a reasonable person, you understand. In fact I have the insight to divine that some of you are even innocent, and I'd hate for there to be some misunderstanding ending in me sitting trial. That would.. complicate things. And you need me alive.”

The vigilante turned back to the group and without warning pounced on a nearby table with a cartoonishly broad grin, promptly spilling a neat pile of testimonies in the disturbed light of a guttering candle, the spectacle of which threw his unrestrained blunderbuss into sharp, surreal relief. The papers, for their part, alighted haphazardly on the floor of the room in complete disarray, settling in the shadows like the fallen leaves of a thousand crying orphaned kittens. (What.)

“I hate seeing innocents die,” he admitted earnestly, casting his eyes earthward in a unexpectedly tranquil display of wistful, silent reverence, and spoke no more.

Unfortunately his audience had failed to join in his reverence and were instead focused on very noticeably quivering in their britches. All except the guy covered in ketchup and the really hairy guy sitting in the corner and gazing longingly at the moonless sky, but yeah, apart from those guys, most of the group was quivering in their britches. If only England would be so kind as to ship keys with their locks none of this weirdness would be happening.

“Now then,” he sprite-ily continued, now hopping down from the table to pace back and forth with forefinger and thumb cupping his Puritanical chin, “I need to know..”

“Excuse me, sir,” intoned a stubble-chinned individual with a highly suspicious star-shaped badge, “but what exactly--”

The vigilante gave a triumphant roar and suddenly pulled the trigger of his gun, blowing away all of his audience and a good deal of the wooden house with a thunderous report, leaving it a skeletal husk of shattered boards and smoldering beams as the debris ballooned out all around in an impossibly wide radius before easing back down to the ground in a dramatic display of something more akin to a terrorist attack than some guy with a firearm.

Silence once again regained control. The vigilante raised his eyebrow and nodded triumphantly at the desecrated scene, clearly satisfied. Yet behind him, unseen, the dark night began its calm enclosure, followed by a voice:

“Want to see a knife trick?”
