Gender, Gender Differences, and Statistics

Postby SarahSaurus » Thu Feb 11, 2016 12:14 pm

All sorts of fun things to talk about! This conversation started in this thread: http://www.blankmediagames.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=37114
And I'm moving it here. Basically it's kind of a debate-y thread for discussing ideas on gender (what does gender really mean? How many genders are there? etc), gender differences (are males and females really so different? Really so similar?), and feel free to throw in some statistical discussion about it all.

To continue where we left off, I want to just point out that arguing that males are more dominant and females are more submissive, simply because of your own personalty/life experience, is pretty much the same as this guy arguing that the Earth is flat, since in his personal experience, he can't see the curve: http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/26/entertainment/rapper-bob-earth-flat-theory/

Also in pretty much all of my psych classes at college, and my statistics class, and my research methods class, one big point is that personal experience is NOT a great source of truthful information. There are a lot of people out there in the world, living under a lot of different circumstances. To assume that your one little life is representative of the entire population is just really, really wrong.

That is much better asked over here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=28895

OH GOD PLEASE NO FLAT EARTH REFERENCES (I had homework on it ;_;)

I can see three genders from what I know, Male, Female, and Transgender.
I tend to see Males as more aggressive than Females in many things, such as leadership, sports, games, etc.
My only real issue currently in "gender equality" is that people still make stereotypes and fight for nothing.
Everyone should have the same rights, and if they're paid unfairly due to gender, they need to talk to their boss.
Anything unfair based on gender doesn't mean it's a nationwide issue.

Personally, as a student, my main issue is girls are fighting for their rights to play sports, which makes sense.
Our school has been variant on sports to participate in, but currently, there's tennis, basketball, track, cross-country, wrestling, badminton, and volleyball.
Wrestling used to be boys-only, and badminton and volleyball are girls-only.
There used to be boys-only football, girls-only gymnastics, but those are removed.
A few years ago, someone argues girls should do wrestling, and the school changed it for them, even though I've heard only something like 1 girl was there last year, and 3 this year.
But when an entire class argues for boys volleyball, it's swept off, even when a teacher is asking why there's little participation in third-quarter sports, wrestling and girls volleyball.

Basically, because of history, people are getting what they want, and it's going unnoticed.
Equal rights should be equal. If individuals are the issue, then talk to them or someone they know.

Nothing linked to the mind can be totally discrete. Therefore gender must either be a spectrum of infinite values or non-existent. Either makes sense to me. I consider it a spectrum because its easier for me. Other than vague evolutionary behaviors there is no definite line where gender exists.

A lot of the way we think about male and female gender differences is based on media. And toys... companies know they can exploit these values to sell toys to kids. Which is why everything has to blue or pink, boy stuff or girl stuff... etc. Its pretty dumb I think. But they're selling to a majority, not catering to what everyone wants.

I don't like statistics a lot of the time. They mislead people on everything, because they tell a tiny fraction of a story. Its the literal equivalent of judging a book by its cover. So I'm not going to bring any up right now. The percentage values for males and females will be different in a lot of areas, but that says nothing to anyone.

Gender is basically a social class that we're expected to care and understand, up to the extent of using the knowledge to help or hurt others. People who attempt to expand or demolish the classes are usually belittled, counter-argued, or shunned. Our society is too idiotic to understand what is outside the box of what they call "status quo", thus traditions > ingenuity to them.

tl;dr - who gives a shit for gender. Do as you wish and be what/who you want to be, as long as you don't hurt your fellow others.

Going to have to stop you there:
1. There is a fuckton of genders, a whole spectrum and then some, Gender Fluid, Gender Neutral, Demigender and Agender just to name a few
2. 'Transgender' isn't a gender, there are Trans Men, who are male, but born with a female body, and Trans Women, who are female, but born with a male body, these people's genders are Male and Female respectively

Okay, mini rant over

We're not as different as the media makes us out to be, but of course there are differences. Women are usually more cunning, patient, and empathetic, while men are more aggressive, driven, and self-centered. This whole "dominant vs submissive" gender argument is baseless, though. As someone else said, just look at the S&M community. Pretty much all male subs.

So, afaik, Gender is a broad spectrum. The shitty thing about it is that society presses two types of genders on people and expects them to conform: Hyper-aggressive masculinity and wilting-violet female. When a strong woman is shown in a TV series, especially one who fights or is a killer/aggressive, traits seen as masculine, she's discredited as a woman until she's put in a dress, and then she's eye candy. (OUAT actually addressed this with Emma Swan in season 1.) And if you're not a hyper-aggressive, masculine male, then society paints you as a woman because that's the most degrading thing you could ever be as a man. Let that sink in.

However, people live outside these two boxes. Every person is unique and people shouldn't be shunted off into boxes and then ridiculed when they don't fit in. :/

Sexual dominants and submissives are not "degenerates", and they do count as part of the overall population.

Some men are dominant, some women are dominant. Some men are submissive, some women are submissive.

Probably a higher percentage of men are dominant than the percentage of dominant women. I don't think that makes it right to stereotype them the way that society does, though. Still plenty of people of both genders who don't fit that mold.

beautiful insight, thank you for opening my eyes. +1 :)
