What is the most visually stunning or beautifully animated anime?

I want to watch a good one. I watched some in the 90's but they weren't that impressively drawn and seemed to consist of repeating the same few frames over-and-over.

Surely they have come a ways. Like Disney movies, right?

In my opinion, Nagi no Asukara is absolutely beautiful. Anything my P.A. Works is visually stunning, though I can't vouch for some of their stories. Also any Kyoto Animation anime, specifically Hyouka! No Game No Life is also beautiful and a really fun show to watch.

For movies, 5 Centimeters per Second and Garden of Words. They're nicknamed "5 Wallpapers per Second" and "The Garden of Wallpapers" for a reason. ;3 Anything like Disney movies (story-wise, art's still good.), try out Studio Ghibli films like Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke.

Anything by Studio Ghibli and Redline come to mind when I think of anime that are beautifully animated

In terms of an anime series instead of movies though, Guilty Crown and the currently-airing ERASED are pretty solid
although Guilty Crown is not very great in terms of story

What is the most visually stunning or beautifully animated anime?

That's really down to personal preference. Some people consider the kind-of semi-CGI style to be beautiful, whereas I have only personally seen one example that's actually good imo while the rest seem crude and flat.
Whereas in reverse, I think the slightly surreal style of Mononoke and the Bake Neko arc of Ayakashi Samurai Horror Stories, and the paper puppet style of Yami Shibai to be quite stunning, whereas other people think they're too strange.

I agree and I'm wondering the same thing.

Most of the people here though seem to be interested in both anime and videogames, or just one on their own.

I personally have never been a very big fan of anime. The only anime I'll really call myself a fan of would have to be Yu Yu Hakusho (terribly underrated, but was a very good anime in the early 90's, was overshadowed by Dragonball) and Yu-Gi-Oh! Season 0 (the one where it doesn't only revolve around card games and the main character is a pretty badass anti-hero).

In my opinion, there are way too many bad anime. I feel like bad anime make up most of the anime "industry", and actually good ones are a rarity.
I feel like too many of them have generic plots and characters. Most of them have the generic protagonist who fights to save his friends, usually is black haired in anime with harem genre so that they're relateable to the audience (a nice way to say, you get to be your very own reader insert) or just has an impossible hair color in an average shounen anime, etc. etc. Plus, too many "modern anime" have unnecessary filler or idiotic ecchi/harem scenes, when it isn't even a harem/ecchi-genre or based series.

Not to mention I just have a passionate hatred for harem and ecchi genre series.
I feel like they're all pretty much the same thing (this actually describes my stance pretty well) and I feel like the only purpose they serve is to be a substitute for teenage weeaboos to fap to instead of looking up actual "hentai" or porn.
Adding a loli to one makes it even worse.

I'm not just cheap fodder used as a love interest kek

But regarding the topic, tbh a lot of people online like anime.
It's probably because the Internet is a magnet for introverts and stuff.
Plus being online a lot does get you exposed to things like anime so even if someone didn't know about it, it's almost certain they'll stumble upon it. And if they like it, well, we've got another anime fan, I guess.
