In Which A Theme Park Sheds Its Dark Past To Welcome New Guests...And Nothing Is What It Seems

Humans have a fascination with many things, the vast majority of which are normally severely detrimental to an individual's health, as if humans are, as a species, suicidal. The consumption of food that is riddled with toxins, the exploration of places which could contain any number of dangers, the viewing of terrifying movies and games...and perhaps, most common of all, the rush of adrenaline that comes from riding a speeding metal contraption. Of course, every needs has something specific, some establishment designed to cater to these hungers...within a safe and completely controlled environment, of course! That is...until something goes terribly, horribly, catastrophically wrong.

The Wonderland Theme Park.

A myth of a myth, a story to be told around campfires on the Hallowed Eve, to make children afraid of sleeping alone that night. It was the epitome of amusement facilities, the creme de la creme of the entertainment industry, a beautiful marvel of lights and music and laughter. Years in the making, years in the construction, it was going to be THE theme park, the one that everyone wanted to visit, the one that everyone talked about above all others, it was meant to be the star that outshone all rivals. And for a while, a short sweet while, it was.

It all came crashing down in a single day.

After what happened that day, the gates were closed, the rides went still, the laughter fell silent. Many attempted to buy the land, to put the park to the torch and build anew upon the ashes, but always the plans fell through, often violently, and soon it became known as a cursed place. For decades, it was left to rot, an icy carcass of what once was and what could have been had that dreadful day not happened, and that was what everyone thought would continue to be.

The fact that now, a small group of individuals find themselves on a bus bound for that place, suggest otherwise. Indeed, the news went viral only a week before, that someone had not only bought the theme park at some undisclosed time in the past, it had been renovated, refurbished and now returned to life by some mysterious individual. The message that came with the news, that a special select few would get to witness the park in all its newfound glory and that a free raffle had been put in place to select those few, had sent the media into a frenzy of speculation and conspiracy theories. Who WAS this mysterious new owner? How had they rebuilt the park so quickly? Why had they even done it in the first place? Thousands upon thousands upon thousands entered the raffle, all of them chomping at the bit for the chance to visit a legend like Wonderland.

It has seemed like a fever dream when the emails came, each one headed with congratulations and other such PR speak, most of which was skipped over in favour of seeing their prize at the bottom, the ticket that would allow them entry to that park. All they had to do was meet at a specific bus depot, at a specific time on a specific day, and then their journey would begin. It seemed so extraordinary, almost as if it was hoax, and the nondescript, featureless bus that pulled up at the station did nothing but add to the scepticism.

Then the doors opened and, if the gathered guests had any ideas about what they thought the new proprietor of such an infamous theme park would look like...it certainly wasn't the girl that practically bounced off the bus, a pep in her step and eyes alight with joy. For one, she looked way too young, certainly no older than most of those gathered, and for another she was too...well, happy. Everything about her was bright and cheerful, from the numerous ribbons she wore to the way her hair was half-dyed pink. In fact, the only thing about her that wasn't pink was the black of her undyed hair and the sparkling blue eyes that contained her glee.

"Welcome, welcome, welcome! I am SO excited to meet you all! I'm Lettie, the new owner of the Wonderland Theme Park and your gracious host during your stay with us! I bet you all just can't wait to see what's waiting for you, it's gonna knock your socks off! Now, please hop on the bus and we will set off right away! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask once we're on the go!"
