Beginner Guidelines to Role Ideas and More

Role Ideas (RI) can be a difficult place to get the hang of. If you are new to Role Ideas, don’t worry! This thread will walk you through the basics of this subforum, along with all other rules in case you forget them.

Step 1: Proposing an Idea

Ideas are easy to come up with, but it is important that you format it correctly so that anyone reading will be able to understand what your idea is and how it works. Here are a few templates that you can follow. You may follow any that you want, since all of them get your role's basic premise out there in a readable way. You may also use your own format, but make sure it is easy to follow along when reading.

What Each Feature Means:

Role Name: The name of your role.
Role Alignment: The alignment and subalignment of your role.
Summary: A compact description of what your role is and what it does. Mainly used as flavor text.

Attack: The attack level of your role (None, Basic, Powerful, Unstoppable).
Defense: The defense level of your role (None, Basic, Powerful, Invincible).
Priority: A number of what priority your role has. This is generally optional; if you don't know, leave it as "?"
Unique: Stating if your role is unique or not. A simple "Yes" or "No" will do.

Abilities: A short sentence of what your role does, either during the day or at night.
Attributes: Either describing the abilities of the role, or anything your role does which is not an ability.

Investigative Results: The results that all three investigative roles (Sheriff, Investigator, and Consigliere) receive upon inspecting your role.

Goal: The goal of your role which will lead you to victory. This can be a factional goal or an individual one.
Victory Conditions: A list of all of the roles your role can win with, and the ones it cannot win with.

Notifications: Any notifications that your role may generate or receive at any point. For example, "You have revealed yourself as the Mayor!".
Mechanics: Includes things such as role immunities (Roleblock Immunity, Detection Immunity, Control Immunity, etc.), along with any interactions it has with other roles.
Additional Information: Anything you couldn't place in one of the above categories. For example, this could be an explanation of how your role can be useful or anything else you want people to know.

Achievements: A list of the achievements of your role, and/or an explanation as to why certain achievements were removed/added in the case of a rework or edit of an existing role.
Lore: Any flavor your role has. This can be a quick description or an entire backstory, but don't feel the need to go too overboard if you don't want to.

When posting a Role Idea, format your title as: Role Name (Role Alignment)

When posting a Role Rework, format your title as: Role Name [Buff/Nerf/Rework/Overhaul]
Buff: When the edit(s) given makes the role in question more powerful.
Nerf:When the edit(s) given makes the role in question less powerful.
Rework: When the edit(s) given includes both nerfs and buffs.
Overhaul: When the edit(s) given change the main purpose of the role.

Color Codes:
It isn't required, but it's highly recommended that you use color in your threads so it is easier to read. These are the ones you can use:

Town: #70E000 *
Mafia: #DD0000
Coven/Witch: #BF5FFF
Amnesiac: #22FFFF
Arsonist: #EE7600
Executioner: #CCCCCC
Guardian Angel: #E6E6E6 *
Jester: #F7B3DA
Juggernaut: #A12B56
Pestilence: #424242
Pirate: #EDC240
Plaguebearer: #CFFF63
Serial Killer: #336EFF
Survivor: #DDDD00
Vampire: #7B8968
Werewolf: #9F703A

Subalignment: #49A9D0
Necronomicon: #990099
Full Moon: #34ADC6

(Note: Town's color is #7FFF00, and Guardian Angel's is #FFFFFF. However, these two colors don't work well when using the forum with its default theme. If your role color doesn't work well on the forums, you can use one that does work well and put your role's real hexcode in "Additional Information".)

An Example of a Role Idea using Template 1 (New Simple Version):
Spoiler:
Forger - Mafia (Deception)

Attack: None
Defense: None

Abilities:
    - Choose a person and rewrite their last will at night.
Attributes:
    - If your target dies at night, their Last Will is replaced with your forgery and their role will be shown as the role you select to forge.
    - You will not lose a forgery if your target does not die.
    - You may only perform 2 forgeries.

Investigative Results:
    Sheriff: Your target is suspicious!
Investigator: Your target could be a Lookout, Forger, Juggernaut, or Coven Leader.
Consigliere: Your target is good at forging documents. They must be a Forger.

Goal: Kill anyone that will not submit to the Mafia.

Victory Conditions:
    You win with the Mafia
    You win with the Survivors
    You win with the Witches
    You must kill the Town
    You must kill the Coven
    You must kill Serial Killers
    You must kill Arsonists
    You must kill Werewolves
    You must kill Juggernauts
    You must kill Vampires
    You must kill Plaguebearers
    You must kill Pestilence
    You may spare anyone else

Additional Information:
This is a small buff to the Forger since they don't have as many charges as the Janitor. To make up for that, the forgery will be refunded if their target does not die at night. The Forger will also have all roles at the top of their UI in order of their faction.

An Example of a Role Idea using Template 2 (New Detailed Version):
Spoiler:

Investigative Results:
    Sheriff: Your target is suspicious!
Investigator: Your target could be a Lookout, Forger, Juggernaut, or Coven Leader.
Consigliere: Your target is good at forging documents. They must be a Forger.

Achievements: Same as current Forger's

Additional Information:
This is a small buff to the Forger since they don't have as many charges as the Janitor. To make up for that, the forgery will be refunded if their target does not die at night. The Forger will also have all roles at the top of their UI in order of their faction.

Lore: Same as current Forger's

Step 2: Creating your Idea

There are many factors to consider when creating your role idea, including the role's basic elements, the role's interactions, and other complex features. The guide below encompasses many of the things that we feel you should consider when creating your idea.

    - Who: What is the name of the role? What is its alignment? What is its backstory?
    - What: What does the role do? What does it do for the game?
    - When: When does the role's ability work? Is it during the day, at night, both, or neither?
    - Why: What is the point of the role? Does it have value? Is it balanced?
    - How: How does the role affect the game? How does it help its team? How does it win?
The "who" is supposed to represent the core identity of the role; basic things like name, alignment, and lore. Lore, whilst never being more important than having a balanced role, can turn an otherwise bland concept into an exciting one. The name should also represent the theme of your role or faction.

The "what" is the core facets of the role. This includes its abilities and attributes, as well as any special features the role has. When coming up with these features you should always ask yourself what each one does for the game. For example, adding Powerful Defense to a role may sound cool, but you should always consider the effects that could have on the rest of the game.

The "when" is a pretty simple question to answer. Either they have a passive ability, an active night ability, or an active day ability. You can limit the amount of times the role can use its ability if you find it too powerful to be used each night. Remember to specify if it can only use its ability while dead or not.

The "why" is a question that requires a lot of thought. A role can be really cool and fun to play as, but if it doesn't have a point or isn't balanced, it can actually hurt the game overall. Make sure you carefully consider how much your role is needed in the game.

The "how" is considering the largest parts of the role's design. You must determine what the role's goal is and how it wins, and then you have to consider how it helps its team, how it hurts other opposing teams, and how it affects the game as a whole.

Once you have considered these five core aspects of role design, you are ready to move on and flesh out your role!

Step 3: Balancing your Idea

After you have considered the five key aspects, you can start looking into the details of the role, including many things that will determine how it influences the game. By now, you should have come up with something that you like and feel will improve the game. The first thing you should lock down after coming up with your initial concept is the alignment of your role.

The Alignments:
Spoiler: Town

Town Investigative: This category covers all Town roles that use various abilities to narrow down who is evil and who is not. Diversity is especially important in this category, as each Town Investigative role should be substantially different from the rest.

Town Killing: This category is home to all of the Town roles that can actively kill, usually being punished in some way if they kill another Townmember (unless they have no control over whom they kill). Power is especially important in this category, as any Town Killing role must be limited in some way so they can't win the entire game on their own.

Town Protective: This category includes any Town role whose main ability is used to protect their target from death. You can add other side attributes, such as Killing or Investigative ones, but remember that it must protect others somehow. Balance is especially important in this category, as there is a very fine line between a underpowered Town Protective and an overpowered one.

Town Support: Anything that cannot be categorized in the alignments above falls under this. These roles usually have a wide variety of abilities that can assist the Town, each unique in their own manner. Remember that their abilities should not try to actively hurt themselves or other Townmembers. There aren't a lot of guidelines for this one, apart from being creative and trying to come up with something interesting whilst still keeping balance in mind.

Mafia

Mafia Deception: These roles exist to deny the Town crucial information and/or spread false information. You should avoid making another Mafia Deception role that messes up Town Investigative results (Framer already has that covered). Creativity is especially important in this category, as there are many ways that a Mafia Deception role could potentially screw with the Town's information.

Mafia Killing: These roles kill for the Mafia (pretty straightforward). The Mafia can only kill one person each night, and this should not change with the addition of a new Mafia Killing role, so you must keep this in mind and balance around it. The Mafia's strength lies in numbers and knowledge, not in sheer power. It is recommended that you do not try to make a new Mafia Killing role unless you are sure it is balanced (Ambusher is NOT an example of this).

Mafia Support: These roles exist to help the Mafia and/or hurt opposing factions. This includes gathering information, protecting other Mafia members, or stopping opposing players from doing things to help their own faction. Variety is especially important in this category, as each Mafia Support role should function in a unique way to help the Mafia win.

Coven

Coven Evil: These roles should all be unique (literally and figuratively) to avoid copies of pre-existing Coven roles. It's generally a good idea to build your role around the Necronomicon, not change it just to fit your role. Bear in mind that the purpose of the Necronomicon is to either create a method for the role to maintain 1 KPN (Kill Per Night) or support their current method of killing to attain a better degree of consistency in carrying out 1 KPN. All Coven roles should always have the ability to kill in some form without the Necronomicon, whether directly or indirectly.

Neutrals

Neutral Benign: Any of these roles should be capable of winning with anybody else in the game and have their own unique, special goal to attain in order to win. Any role that fits these criteria should go here. A Neutral Benign role can help or harm other players, but avoid turning it into one that opposes a certain faction or has a method of killing. Also try to avoid making a Neutral Benign role too similar to existing ones, as the game could become bland as a result.

Neutral Evil: Any Neutral Evil role should be capable of winning with everybody that isn't the Town, and their attributes and/or abilities should directly harm the Town. Any role that fits these criteria should go here. A Neutral Evil role shouldn't directly kill another player without meeting a requirement, completing their goal, or using their ability which results in a player dying if a circumstance is met. Also try to avoid making a Neutral Evil role that has a special goal other than living to see the Town lose, as the game's balance could suffer as a result.

Neutral Killing: Any of these roles should be capable of consistently killing off everybody they cannot win with, and they should only be capable of winning with Neutral Benign roles, Neutral Evil roles, and their own role (a Serial Killer and a Serial Killer can win together, but not a Serial Killer and an Arsonist). Any role that fits these criteria can go here. A Neutral Killing role should ideally kill 1 person per night on average, although you don't need a nightly kill to be a Neutral Killing role. All Neutral Killing roles should have some sort of Permanent Defense, or have the ability to earn it.

Neutral Chaos: There are literally no guidelines to this category. Any unbalanced or crazy Neutral role should go here, although use common sense and don't go too overboard. It is recommended that you do not make a Neutral Chaos role, as they have slim chances of being added into the game, are generally unbalanced, and are generally frowned upon by the community. You're better off reworking a pre-existing Neutral Chaos role that you might think is unbalanced. Neutral Chaos roles are often better off being changed and balanced to fit another category; however, if you put in the time and effort to make a unique and balanced Neutral Chaos role, go right ahead.

Finishing Touches:

Sheriff Results: When a Sheriff interrogates your role at night, what result does it get back? Most Mafia and Coven roles should show up as "suspicious" to the Sheriff, and all Town roles should show up as "innocent", but yours could be different. In addition, certain roles have Detection Immunity when revealed to the Sheriff (Werewolf on non-Full Moon Nights, Arsonists, and so on). Is your role one of them?

Investigator Results: When an Investigator targets your role at night, what result does it get back? You can add your role to a current Investigator result, or make your own. However, it is recommended that each Investigator result have at least three roles in them: at least one of them a Town role which is not easily confirmable, and at least one of them an evil role.
Spoiler: Classic Investigator Results:

Vigilante, Veteran, Mafioso, or Ambusher
Medium, Janitor, or Retributionist
Survivor, Vampire Hunter, or Amnesiac
Spy, Blackmailer, or Jailor
Sheriff, Executioner, or Werewolf
Framer, Vampire, or Jester
Lookout, Forger, or Witch
Escort, Transporter, Consort, or Hypnotist
Doctor, Disguiser, or Serial Killer
Investigator, Consigliere, or Mayor
Bodyguard, Godfather, or Arsonist

Coven Investigator Results:

Vigilante, Veteran, Mafioso, Pirate, or Ambusher
Medium, Janitor, Retributionist, Necromancer, or Trapper
Survivor, Vampire Hunter, Amnesiac, Medusa, or Psychic
Spy, Blackmailer, Jailor, or Guardian Angel
Sheriff, Executioner, Werewolf, or Poisoner
Framer, Vampire, Jester, or Hex Master
Lookout, Forger, Juggernaut or Coven Leader
Escort, Transporter, Consort, or Hypnotist
Doctor, Disguiser, Serial Killer, or Potion Master
Investigator, Consigliere, Mayor, Tracker, or Plaguebearer
Bodyguard, Godfather, Arsonist, or Crusader

Consigliere Results: When a Consigliere targets your role at night, what result does it get back? While the Consigliere should always be told exactly what role it investigated (or what they appear as), try to spruce up the result with a bit a flavor text about your role's actions or personality.

Limiting Abilities: If your role is too powerful to use its ability unchecked, put a limit on it. Either give it a maximum amount of uses (Doctor has one self-heal, Veteran has three alerts, etc.), give it a cooldown (Potion Master have a three day cooldown with their potions), give it a penalty if misused (Vigilante commits suicide if it hits another Townmember), some combination of these limits, or maybe something completely new and different.

Uniqueness: Making a role Unique (there can only be one in any given game, never more) is a double-edged sword. Making your role Unique can be great for when things either would get too chaotic or too unbalanced if there were multiple of them; however, you must be extremely careful when making anything unique, as this can have large effect on Investigator results and claim space, as well as overall game balance.

Notifications: When your role performs its action, does it alert its target? If so, what does that notification message say? Does your role have any special interactions with other roles (for example, any role that roleblocks a Serial Killer gets killed by it)? If so, what message does each role receive upon interacting?

We hope this guide could help you in the process of making Town of Salem Role and Faction Ideas!

3. Joke Role Ideas Are Not Allowed

Posting role ideas for the purpose of jokes/memes is considered spam. Posting a single joke thread in this board will get you an Official Board Warning and the removal of the thread in question (this includes copy & pasting roles from Forum Mafia).

Here is an example of a joke role idea (DO NOT make something similar to this):

Role Name:
The Turd

Role Alignment:
Neutral Benign

Attributes:
- Sits like a lump during the day

Abilities:
- Able to make people worship you at your shrine

Goal:
Survive to the end

Wins with:
Everyone

Special Attributes:
Unique Role, Night Immune

Investigative Results:
Sheriff - Your target is not suspicious.
Investigator - Your target is a loner.
Consigliere - Your target does nothing.

Rules Which You Must Abide By When Posting

Postby oliy » Sun Jun 24, 2018 1:52 pm

4. Rules Which You Must Abide By When Posting

The Role Ideas subforum frequently has instances of forumers not adhering to the Forum Rules. Failure to comply to any of the Forum Rules will result in a warning or other action at the discretion of the Role Ideas Moderators.

The rules below (quoted from Forum Rules) include many of the rules commonly violated in the Role Ideas subforum, especially the ones given in bold. Please familiarise yourselves with them to avoid future comeuppance.

Rule 7 & 8 from the Forum Rules:

7. Spam isn't tolerated on this forum.
Examples of spam include, but are not limited to;
  • Posting multiple times in a row rather than all in one post. Use the Edit button to edit your post if you have additional comments to make.
  • Spamming the use of smilies in your posts. (Please limit to 4 or less.)
  • Abusing the report system for any reason. (This includes, but isn't limited to; Posting gibberish in the reasoning for the report, filing a report after being asked to stop by staff, etc.)
  • Making posts that are not relevant to the topic at hand or have very little content/quality. This rule applies everywhere. (In Role Ideas, explain why you like or dislike a role. In Suggestions, explain why you agree or disagree with an idea, etc.) One word responses that give little to no substance belong in this category ('/support' is an example of this.) Any posts failing to meet this requirement will be removed and the user will be informed of the removal and why. (In The Lounge, the enforcement is a little relaxed, but still enforced.)
  • Post farming - the act of commenting on many threads with very small and lesser quality posts - is not allowed. If staff believe you are attempting to post farm, you will be contacted and your posts deleted.
  • Repeating what someone else has said. (This includes posting just exact quotes without addressing the quote with a response.)
  • Cross and double posting aren't allowed. (Posting in multiple forum boards or posting the same thread multiple times, respectfully.)
  • Posting to derail the original topic of the thread in question and directing discussions in direction of a completely different topic.
  • Posting to bump a topic older than a month that you're not the original poster (OP) of, in addition to any of the spam examples (posting multiple times, spamming smilies, etc). If the bump creates new replies to the old thread or the bump was needed in order to reconstitute a past issue, then it is permitted to do so. If you wish to bump a thread older than 1 month, contact a Global Moderator for approval. Failure to do so will violate the rule and result in punishment.
  • Posting asking for referrals towards the game's "Refer a Friend" feature to get the rewards.

8. Personal attacks at a general audience, specific groups of people, or individual users are not allowed, nor tolerated, including outside drama.
This includes but isn't limited to baiting, mocking, intentionally picking fights, racism, sexism, discrimination of any kind, flaming, etc. If you have any issues with a certain forum member, please keep it to PMs but do not forget we enforce the rules in PMs as well. Do not bring PM arguments to the open forum. If necessary, contact a Moderator for assistance by reporting the PM in question. Do not bring drama outside the forums into the forums. Failure to do so will result in a public reminder, followed by a Board Warning, and if necessary, a ban. Slurs of any kind directed at members will result in a permanent ban, including, but not limited to racial and homophobic slurs.

To summarise the most commonly broken rules:

- Please use the "Bump Topic" feature in your thread which you wish to bump, which will appear a few days after the last post. If you do not wish to use this, you may make a post 5 days after your last post, given you were the last poster; anything less than 5 days is considered spam.

- When making changes to your role idea, or giving feedback for a role idea, keep all of your ideas in a single post rather than posting multiple times. If you have additional comments to make, edit your original post.

- Please ensure your content is constructive and informative, providing a reason for your opinion, whether it be positive or negative. Posts with a lack of reasoning and constructive ideas/feedback will be considered as spam and judged accordingly. This includes posts featuring one word responses that give little to no substance ('/support' is an example of this).

- Please make sure that all of your posts stay on topic; posts deviating from the discussion regarding the Role Idea will be considered as spam. If this does occur, please move the discussion to forum PMs, away from the thread in question.

- Heated arguments and derogatory remarks are not permitted; please remain civil and treat others as you would want to be treated. Similarly, flame wars are not permitted.

- Do not bump threads older than 1 month that you’re not the original poster (OP) of if you have no specific reason to do so. If you do have a specific reason, contact a Global Moderator for approval.

Role Ideas Contests

Postby Parallax7 » Wed Aug 15, 2018 7:18 pm

5. Role Ideas Contests

Occasionally, Role Ideas Contests are held, which are contests where players will debate about each others Role Ideas. Winner/s are chosen among those who are considered to have the best role/s, the best ability to debate, or a combination of both. Each host will have their own take on how to decide the appropriate winner/s.

Joining a Role Ideas Contest

To join one of these contests, you should first read the instructions and details at the beginning of the thread.

Hosting a Role Ideas Contest

In order to host one of these contests, you must privately message one of the Role Ideas Moderators with your contest instructions. It is important that your post gives information on how to play your contest, as well as a list of all of the rules for contest. You also need to properly set up a system to ensure that players know who they are arguing against and what they are arguing about; the most important thing to do as a host of a contest is to stay active and keep track of everything that is going on.

For an example of what your Role Ideas Contest setup should look like, please see here.
