The presence of it says more than the substance I say. Considering you never need to leave a death note in Mafia ever which I would assume people would do if they're fairly inexperienced. This points to one or more people that know what they're doing in the mafia with the kill and the DN even existing.

I feel like Gent being the target N1 is just mafia killing priority players. He was active, and there's a lot of players (myself included) without much recent experience (or experience in general), and if you were mafia those are the players you'd want to leave alive earlier on.

death notes have three purposes:
1) incriminate someone to make them look bad
2) incriminate yourself / an ally to argue the first case is happening
3) incriminate yourself for no reason

hypothetical: theres a deathnote to frame truegent
you can argue gent is town because hes not stupid to frame himself, but also that he is mafia because 1) never actually works to lynch someone so of course he's framing himself, but then he must be town because if the only logical conclusion is that 2) is happening, he'd never do 2) so it must be 1), etc.

its a pretty circular argument imo

Agreed. I personally had some sort of feeling about Gent before Night and didn't know why. I couldn't figure it out. Well, now it's painfully obvious what I was feeling.
