This is the Bacteriophage Ex Machina.

Definitions are made to set standards, to make understanding and categorizing entities easier but with new definitions, comes new exceptions. When life was given a meaning, occurrence of a being that did not quite fit into the description was inevitable and in a twist of irony, an obligate pathogen which can only procreate using a being that is defined as living came into existence undermining both living and the living. When this germ reaches its target, it disintegrates to incorporate into it, reassessing the host’s coding network only to make it reassemble more of what was there at the start, inevitably destroying the host in a bursting action called lysis to release many more copies of the pathogen but this… is the shortest version of the story about the most indifferent pathogen in the entire universe.

Even though it sounds like a redundant question, it is still not known whether the host or the parasite came first. The history of the first parasite in the universe is a complete mystery not because it is too old but because it is too conflicting. Virions are the simplest of all the microorganism yet they are also the most susceptible to change whether it be random or artificial, making them extremely complex at the very same time. The first of the viruses, the bacteriophage, especially drew the attention of the scientists due to its ability to target Bacteria to procreate. As one of the rare hunters of the infamous kingdom, bacteriophages were to be one of the great assets within Project HUMAN OPUS or so it was thought. Introduction of an alien microbe into the augmented organism without rejection, was a hard task and it was not even known if this symbiosis could last forever… until now that is. The dire situation indeed made the Penumbra System go haywire and bacteriophages are no different than any other dangers they are facing, yet the task and abilities of these colonies did not change. They just became a death sentence for the… nonliving.
