Security Suggestion

Postby VoidRuler » Mon Nov 30, 2015 1:04 pm

I've observed this on other similar websites. With the font that Town of Salem is using, the capital i looks similar to a lowercase l. I've taken measures against this myself a while ago by making an alternate called "voidruier" (with the i being capital, appearing the same as VoidRuler) to prevent myself from being impersonated.

Anyone who has a lowercase l or capital i in their username could easily be impersonated by someone with malicious intent. I do realize if something happened with this, that I suppose someone could just report it to appeals and have the staff check logs, but I think it would just be much easier if the uppercase "i" was changed to look different from the lowercase l, like this:

To see just how the names look next to eachother, here is a comparison (I added myself on the other account):

l totally support changing the font! I've never had a problem with this but it could cause some stuff about player reports and stuff with these usernames!

You are making a bit too big of a deal out of this. There are plenty of other ways to impersonate others, not just an i + l. I had a problem
with a copycat who used 0 intead of the o in my name. Even though the difference is rather obvious, I can tell you that next 1,5 months
in-game were rather unhappy for me, because everyone mistook me for the copycat. Since the copycat got to run free with the
impersonated name of mine for 4 days or so.

There is plenty of ways to impersonate others, even if the letters are rather different, if there is just a bit of similarity - its enough for
impersonation to act convincingly.

If this was ever the case, all you need to do is prove there is another account which could be impersonating you, and while they look
awfully similar, they dont look identical... its a matter of simple test using a picture editor to compare the lenght of both letters.

Its not enough to impersonate someone entirely. Could be enough to ruin someone´s reputation, but thats bound to be repaired
easily enough.
Away in the real world most of the time, but I return from time to time, at my own whim.

But who in the world has time to go into Photoshop and compare the two usernames?
You're making it sound like it's easy to find if you have a copycat.

Just do a font overhaul and they'll be fine.

Oh yeah I remember hearing about that guy.

I haven't seen anybody whose names begins with lCE so I don't see the need for a font change. It seems like too much of a niche change.

Is it just me or is the egosearch now in Times New Roman? Because they might've started on the overhaul.

A good report judge?

Good report judge will rather take the 2 minutes this takes in the picture editor, to compare these two letters, then making a mistake and punishing an innocent
person.
It literally takes two minutes in layered picture editor like paint.net to compare how these two numbers look like.

(Its actually a lot more difficult to figure out a photoshopped screenshot then this. But the principle is same).

I don't see impersonation as the main concern with this unless you are some mod or admin which is reportable anyways. It's more of a concern when people use this to confuse others by having the same name as their friend and annoy the other players in the current game. It's definetly something that should be fix but is probably not a priority at the moment.
You can always pm me if you want me to comment your role idea
