Self hammering in that scenario is strictly considered gamethrowing.
However, it is also what could be considered a "concede" button. While it does cause the game to intentionally be lost, it is done simply to speed up the inevitable. I don't blame you for wanting to take that action, and I would have done the same in his place without a doubt.

Quite honestly, Eragon wasn't playing particularly well this game
You (and everyone else, for that matter) simply disregarded the possibility that he could be scum because he was active
Be more aware of people who should have died at night, and be wary of the possibility of town that doesn't post much
You'll get used to this happening as time goes on
After all, this is the point of NFM
